The Most Low Maintenance Pet?

Wow, that is sad about the Cockatoo captured like that. It is horrible the way birds are treated.

I know. I feel bad for captive birds in general. They are meant to fly and be free, and we cut off their flight feathers and stick them in little cages. [&o]

Many bird owners do not clip wings. My bird flies. Birds should not be in a cage for long periods of time.

Bettas are the easiest. They don't even need an aeration stystem such as a filter or air pump. All other fish do. I clean my betta bowl out completly about every other month, but I don't time it. I just wait until the water is really dirty, then I know it's time to change it.

That's actually not a very nice way to keep a Betta. Just because they CAN live in a small amount of dirty water, doesn't mean it's GOOD for them. My dog CAN live in a small, dirty space, too, but I tend to work for more than existance, for my pets.

My Betta has a ten gallon tank with an undergravel filter. I've got a divider in there, and I'm going to put something on  the other side, when I decide what, and where to buy it from.

is this for a child? i do not understand why one would want a pet that they didn't have to do much with, unless you it was a "starter" pet [&:]

in my experience hermit crabs are easy and low maintenance.

We have hermit crabs and they are really easy to care for. We've had them 2 years now.

we have lots of "pet" birds-- put out some bird feeders and enjoy.

Cats are pretty easy. Feed em and clean out the litter box.

Fish are hard. Unless you get a huge tank it's very difficult to keep the biochemistry stable.  Fish in those little bowls are just slowly dying, not living. I can't imagine keeping a betta in a little cup (I have a betta enjoying a huge aquarium, such a happy, active fish).

Only clean the tank out completly (meaning rocks and every thing dumped out and scrubbed)  when it is beyond scrubing algea off the glass and half water changes.  You can take out half of the water and replace it with fresh, chemically treated water in between complete changes.

Really? Wow that explains the deaths of someof my Betas. lol
I had thought I wasnt cleaning it enough.

The easiest pet I've had, and I've had a LOT of species, is my corn snake.  Weekly feedings, and maybe a monthly tank cleaning.

The Amazon has suckered me many times by *begging* to be picked up then biting me because he's too excited.

With amazons and macaws and especially with greys you've gotta watch the pupils.  If those pupils are going big to small to big to small...don't put your hand within range-you will get nailed.    I was holding a yellow nape amazon and her MFP walked by.  The bird nailed me...right in the meaty part of my thumb.

I also got a "warning" from my favorite cockatoo.  She put her beak all the way around my wrist-and then looked at me coyly, as if to say "look what I can do and there's nothing you can do to stop me if I choose to do it, honey"  But to her credit she taught me about marker training and allowed me to teach her several markers.

I dont understand the point in getting a pet you dont want to look after, such as not cleaning the cage/tank once a week or so. Lazyness to me.

Birds are messy loud and need lots of things. We have had birds at my house since i was very little, about 5, I'm 21 now and we still have birds. they create a large mess, need out of their cages to fly around (ours are out of thei cage by 8am, and dont go back in there until about 10pm) they need lots of toys and are easy to get hurt 9fly in to a window, eat things they shouldnt, can get carpet fiber caught around their legs and their legs can actually fall off ect ect ect).

A salt water tank is not easy to lok after, a fresh water tank would be easiest, but still not easy enough to buy a bowl stick 2 goldfish in it and forget about them.

Lizads are not easy. they require many tings, such as large tanks/houses special lightings and special diets. Vets are VERY expensive for them as they are exotic pets.

I just dont blive any pet is very low mantience.

Why not get a human?  [sm=rotfl.gif]
You don't have to clean their cage, they can make their own dinner, and they can help take care of the pets.

Not the ones at my house! At the rate I'm going, I'll have the dog trained to pick up her toys before I get the kids or the hubby trained to pick up after themselves [:@]

Fish are easiest to keep care of, but you still have to clean out their tank and add more water and stuff.   There is no such thing as a no-mantance pet, with anything you are going to have to do some work, and it would be best to research any thing you get to make sure you are caring for it correctly.  A lot of the times 'easy to keep' pets are only easy to keep because they are not being kept correctly.

Does anyone even remember the plant that supposable you never had to water at all and it stayed green, was like an air plant but could even live in the driest of environments. It turned out it was just a dried see weed that was spayed green and put in a pot[8|]

It does seem like anything sounding "easy" or "low maintenance" isn't always what it's all made out to be.
