Since we live hundreds (and in some cases thousands) of miles from our family members, I've had this dilemma for years. It got to be way too expensive and time-consuming to buy gifts for each person in a family, adults, kids, etc. The last couple years I've decided one family gift was sufficient per household (especially since all the kids are now 18+ years old).
I tend to go with consumable items so it's "one size fits all" and no one has to find a permanent place for it in their house. For example, wine from our region, gourmet flavored oils & vinegars, some other kind of food that is unique to our area or a favorite of the family, etc.. If food or drink isn't an option (like for family with restricted diets), I go for something like a windchime or mobile for their porch/deck, a fun family game, a really unusual Christmas ornament for their tree.
I'll be watching this thread for other ideas -- I'll be needing some!
