You Know You're From New Jersey When....

You know you're from Jersey when…
You don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges."
You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags.
A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter.
You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
You've eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 A.M.
You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know the town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
You know what a "jug handle" is.
You know that WaWa is a convenience store.
You know that the state isn't all farmland.
You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey--there's the shore--and you don't go "to the shore," you go "down the shore." And when you are there, you're not "at the shore"; you are "down the shore."
You know how to properly negotiate a circle.
You knew that the last sentence had to do with driving.
You know that this is the only "New" state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (try . . .Mexico . . . York . . . Hampshire-- doesn't work, does it?).
You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
You consider putting mayo on a corned beef sandwich a sacrilege.
You don't think "What exit?" is very funny.
You know that people from the 609 area code are "a little different." Yes they are!
You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton--that's for out-of-staters.
The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar.
You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
Every year you have at least one kid in your class named Tony.
You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening credits.
You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall.
You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, and people from Central Jersey go to Belmar, and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way.
You weren't raised in New Jersey--you were raised in either North Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey.
You don't consider Newark or Camden to actually be part of the state.
You remember the stores Korvette's, Two Guys, Rickel's, Channel, Bamberger's and Orbach's.
You also remember Palisades Amusement Park.
You've had a boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries.
You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February. And finally . . .
You've NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER pumped your own gas.

So true!! I grew up in Baltimore but I had relatives in Jersey and NYC. I recognize all of the statements. Including the circle.

BTW, whatever happened to full service gas stations around the U.S.? I haven't seen one since I was a teen in other parts of the U.S. besides areas of the East Coast.

heh, grew up on the Jersey/NY border.  I recognize many of those, but not all.  ;)

I dunno.  I think that only Jersey & Oregon are the only 2 states that have only full service stations anymore.

They have a few here, too. There was one in Valdez and full serve cost the SAME as self serve! Course the price of gas was so high they were embarassed to put it up on a sign, too.

We visited New Jersey in Sept 2005 to see my wife's daughter get married. She was born in Fort Worth, Texas and adopted by a wonderful family from Princeton. The whole dang neighborhood was waiting to throw a welcome party when they came home with a beautiful baby girl in Sept 1973.

Anyway, the only area that looked like a refinery was around Newark. We took a wrong turn coming out of the airport and were headed for the Holland Tunnel, which leads to New York City. I wouldn't have minded, as I've never been there. Anyway, we got back to the turnpike to eventually get to Route 1 to Princeton. It was my first visit to the Northeast and I loved every minute of it. There is a good reason it is called the Garden State. We went shopping in front of the university. I got a t-shirt and my wife a polo shirt that says "Princeton" on it. As a memento, I can honestly say I bought it in Princeton, New Jersey, at Landau's. I expected it to be briskly cool but Ophelia was buzz-sawing moisture up the eastern seaboard. In fact, we had to sit on the tarmac at DFW waiting on weather to clear in Newark. I would love to visit again, sometime.

I grew up in NJ and now am in Baltimore.  Are you still in Baltimore?

There is one self serve station near my house in Parkville AND it is cheaper too, just like gas in NJ is cheaper :).

Ron, if you ever want to go back to Princeton, I'll be glad to be your personal guide.  I grew up there.

Nope!  Davis, CA is home to 1 full service gas station.  It's probably the only one left in the whole state. [:D] I go there once a month because they'll check all the fluids and I know nobody else in my house will check anything, ever.

But no, ours is not cheaper.  It's easily the most expensive station in town. And the stations in Davis are more expensive than the ones in surrounding cities, even cities only 8 miles or so away.

You know that people from the 609 area code are "a little different."

Hey, what's that supposed to mean?  I lived in 609, but they've since changed to 856.  And those of us who lived in that town needed to clearly define MOOREStown from MORRIStown...

So, was Boscov's a PA thing, then?  I miss soft pretzels from the WaWa....!  Even bad ones there are better than the best here...!

I grew up in Princeton (609).  Granted it wasn't a typical town.  I call it "Bringadoon".

Long Island NY still has full service stations.

I love WaWa!  Although their corporate training used to be 3 miles from where I live now, there were no Wawa's local.  Now, there is one around the corner from where I work and I get a pretzel every time I get gas!  I love love love their pretzels.   I am always saying their old slogan... My WaWa!
