anybody here NOT on depression medicine?

And, Joel?  FWIW, yep, I'm on meds and I'm somewhat offended that a serious subject is being made light of.  I'm also somewhat offended by  being mooned by your emoticon.
    • Gold Top Dog
Joel, I think it would help your situation (ie. offending people) if you would think before you speak, I have told my children that many times.  I to am on medication and I need it, I am not offended by your remark because I am confident in my decisions for myself, but there are people who aren't confident about their illness and who may take offense to what you say.  Please....consider what you are saying and how you are saying it before typing it.  Maybe it would help if you put the shoe on the other foot and it was you someone was making a joke about.

Lisa, I slightly disagree with the being confident in your decision.  I never hesitate to share that I take antidepressents and WHY and give my little explanation about depression.....I'm very confident that I am doing the right thing for me, but as long as the vast majority of folks see it as a joke, I don't find it a subject for joking about.

Glenda, I find it strange that this post was started after one of our own was crying out for help. In all the posts responding to her topic, everyone poured out there hearts to her about the different problems they faced and are still facing. For those of us who do suffer from depression, I can say 100% that it never will be a joking matter. I have lost very close people taken by suicide due to depression. My daughter suffers from social anxiety and my son is bipolar. I have struggled along side my children trying to find some sort of solution and it hasn't been easy.

glenda, i would never moon you...

also, i honestly don't know what is so horrible about the original post...i think there is an over-reaction here...

personally, i find talking and being light about depression takes away the taboo, more than people going shush-shush...obviously, if you joke in poor taste, there could be a problem...but i don't see that that happened here at all!!!!

and my own opinion is that it IS a mental illness, at least in many cases...that's why cognitive therapy works so well with so many people...it is often our negative patterns of thinking than cause our depressed emotional feelings, and eventual breakdown.

i have seen that once the breakdown occurs, it then does become a physical matter as well...needing medicine besides therapy...

    • Gold Top Dog
Joel, see that's the problem.  YOU think it's an over reaction.  But by saying that we are over reacting you are MINIMIZING our feelings, as if what WE feel isn't as important as what YOU feel.

I'm done.  I just wanted to say my piece and I'll stay out of your thread now.

ok, you're gone glenda...but i'm still waiting for someone to explain how the original post was insulting to anyone...

let's do a dissection of it:

anybody here NOT on depression medicine?

that sounds to me like i am saying that a very large percentage of people on this forum are on meds...so obviously not a stigma to be on it...

i don't see that it made fun of anyone for being on it...

i don't see that it minimizes the problem of depression...

nor does it imply that it is ok to tease people who are on it...

and considering that i myself am a "victim" of depression, i think any intent of being mean is not there...

yes, i did have humorous intent...so freakin' sue me...

What original post???  All I saw was the thread title and then a bunch of emoticons.  That's not opening up a discussion, that's throwing a sensitive subject into the ring and waiting to see what the fallout is.  I'm with Lena on this one.  If you want to share/illicite discussion about your struggles Joel, fine.  If you want to make light of it as it pertains to you, then that's fine too.  But that was not the impression that I got from this thread.  Furthermore, the title of this thread that you started appears to be asking for input from people who are not taking medications or struggling with depression.  How that is suppose to make those who are taking meds feel better?

only one, but the lightbulb has to really want to change.

excuse me lena...but most people here know that i am recovering from a major depression episode ...

I didn't. I find it interesting that you assume "most people" on i-dog read all your posts.

You may feel like you can poke fun at your own illness or issues Joel. But what makes your post is insensitive IMO is that you're ASSuming that if you feel you can joke about it, everyone else suffering the same illness or issue feels the same way.

    Very good points Kelly. ITA

there are so many women on i-dog that i am so happy i am not married to them...

ok...setting myself up...yeah, and we're thrilled we're not married to you too, joel

Joel, has it occured to you that your attempt to invalidate MY feelings on this issue, and those of others, is what is ticking so many off??  Do you really WANT to be banned for life for being a rude and insensitive jerk?  Is idog just a comedy show for you?

I took no offense to the post...Sometimes when one sees humor in a bad situation, it makes things better...I took this as  a hypothetical question, one which implies that so many of us on the forum are on the same boat.
