Joyce, I didn't stop to read the box it blew my mind that they would even BOX up banana pudding...I mean seriously, how hard is it...I even cook my own pudding when I make mine..of course I don't make it often but when I do it, I do it RIGHT

My mother, God rest her soul, made the best banana pudding in the world.  A hell of a pecan pie too.

I would do an awful lot to get you people to stop talking about food I can't find where I live [sm=biggrin.gif].  The list includes, but is not limited to:

Oreo cookies
Chewy Chips Ahoy
Kraft Dinner
Pecan Pie  (I am aware I can make this, but pies are NOT my strong suit even though I am a decent cook)
Snapple

And a whole host of other things I am probably better off without, but miss desperately nonetheless.

Grrrrrrrr!

I haven't read all the posts, but this one stuck out.

No child belongs shooting a gun.

I beg to differ. I grew up hunting with guns around. At 4 years old, my father took me out hunting every time he could. I helped track deer, watched as they were gutted, and hung around listening to the after stories. I shot a .22 rifle at 5-6 years old, and a 4-10 shot gun at 8. I NEVER EVER once played with a gun. Why? Because I wasn't curious. I knew what a gun was, I knew how they worked, and... most importantly, I KNEW not to play with them... I'd seen what they could do. I knew, once you shot something, it was dead... it wasn't coming back.

At 8 years old... yes that's right, I said 8, I had my hunting liscense. I passed hunter safety then... all on my own. I shot my first deer when I was 15 (and possibly last, if I ever get into hunting again). It was a clean shot and he died quickly and dare I say with dignity... that's not something your average cow can say before she's led off to the slaughter.

A lot of people (note: I did not say all) that don't hunt just don't get why anyone would. Those people don't know what it's like to be 15 feet up a tree at the crack of a crisp, cool dawn and watch the woods come alive. To watch a grey squirrel clamber up the tree next to you, unaware of your prescense... or the red squirrel to climb down and stare into your face with the expression of "watch ya doin'?" Or, how about when a chickadee lands on the branch that's a foot away from your face?

I've spent countless hours in the woods hunting and coming back without my quarry but with great stories to tell. I've also gone out and done things I now regret... like shooting squirrels. One day, I shot a red squirrel and felt so aweful that I swore that I'd never do it again.

Hunting, at least for me, isn't about killing. It's about, for one short moment in time, being a part of the woods. The fun ends when you pull the trigger. Period. That's part of the reason, if I go hunting again (when there's no need for meat), I'll be doing my shooting with a camera.

Finally, I have a ton more respect for the woods than my "city kid" counter parts. I have never thrown a piece of trash out the window (once I did throw a kleenex out... BUT, it had a bee wrapped in it that wouldn't get off the kleenex!). In fact, I often clean up after the 'city kids.' I have a trash bag full of bottles, cans, and wrappers that I picked up from the edge of a well used swimming hole. I also spent considerable time picking up broken beer bottles.

ahhh, but Jaime, have you actually tasted the banana (and other flavors) pudding that comes in a box?  It's pretty darn good.  NOT as good as home made I'm sure, but good none-the-less.  Someone mentioned biscuits and gravy earlier (or in a different post, not sure).  I used to make sausage gravy from scratch...but at some point I tried the packaged gravy, added some cooked sausage and grease and I actually thought that it tasted as good if not better (some brands are better than others) and that's what I've been doing ever since.  Of course DH still laments that I don't make the "real stuff" anymore.  But that doesn't stop him from eating it.  Funny thing though, my nephew (a WV native) was here for a visit last month and one morning, I made a big old southern-style breakfast, including sausage gravy and biscuits.  He turned to his wife and said..."see, this is the real hoggins!"    It was the packaged gravy and frozen Pillsbury biscuits.

Hey Sienna,
Sounds like we grew up alot alike.Good to have you here.

I said this in "that other thread" but I thought I'd like to add it here. I grew up in the Phoenix suburbs but my mom was a firearm safety instructor for Game and Fish.  I must've went to a zillion of these classes with her so I picked up a thing or two.  My dad was and still is a hunter and I took my first shot at a buck when I was about 9 years old.  I missed, thank God, but it freaked me out so much that I'll never shoot at another living creature again.  But I really love to target practice with my husband.  My oldest boy had his first Daisy Red Rider at age 8 and my middle boy just got his this spring at age 7.  I'm proud to say that he just took second place at Scout camp this summer (out of about 200 kids) and he's just starting Wolf this fall.  Someone else said here that growing up with guns taught them to respect them instead of making them curious about them.  I agree.  My boys will know how to handle a gun properly and my husband includes it as one of his favorite things about being a dad - teaching your kid to shoot, ride a bike, play ball, talk to girls, etc.   Not everyone understands this way of life and that's fine.  But it's not fine to criticize someone who believes differently about this than you do, either way.  This board can be very intolerant at times and that's frustrating when you're new.  Hang in there Siana, we've got a lot to learn from each other. Christi

Kate- I so know what you mean! I went to the States for the first time earlier this year and had Krispy Kremes and Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Icecream- I ate practically the whole tub by myself in about half an hour... I have to say, you guys have the best desserts and junk food ever! I can't wait until I go back....

Siana- I've only been here for a short while too, and I still feel a bit like the odd one out sometimes too, but I hope you stick around- this forum's a great place!

Krispy Kremes?  IMHO they don't hold a candle to Dunkin Donuts...........
• Gold Top Dog
We don't get Dunkin' Donuts in NZ either (I don't think)- they only had Krispy Kremes in our hotel at Atlanta- so that was all I got... Now I feel like I missed out! [:(]
I shall most definitely add DDs to my list of foods to eat when I'm next in the US!

I don't know how close you are to London, but there's a shop in Covent Garden called Cyber Candy that sells a few of the things you mentioned.    They also have a store in Brighton and you can order online too.

Jaime, have you actually tasted the banana (and other flavors) pudding that comes in a box?

Oh YES!
I eat boxed pudding, I agree the flavors are good and I actually do make some desserts with boxed pudding...I just couldn't get over the fact that they made a boxed version of Banana Pudding
Sorry to carry on with the "food" area of this thread but I was just in VA for 5 days last week and let me just say I couldn't believe how much I MISSED southern food!! Dustin and I were in our glory..corn bread, biscuits and gravy, pinto beans and yes even some crispy creams. Needless to say we were a little homesick for the food and the Blue ridge Mtns

quote:

I beg to differ.

I was also taught to shoot a gun, as a child. I was taught to RESPECT a gun. My dad went out and bought a youth sized .22 when I was 9, and weighed in at all of *maybe* 45 pounds. My brother was 4. We both learned to properly handle and shoot the gun. As we aged, we were offered the opportunity to hunt. I went, once. I saw the deer, and was in awe. My dad didn't shoot it, because he knew better.... I would have been so traumatized. I'm glad he didn't. I haven't shot a gun, since, but I *do* know how to use one. My brother enjoys shooting, and owns several guns. He's getting his hunting license, this year. I told him he has to bring me scraps.

I'm not at  all opposed to responsible gun ownership, or responsible (kind) hunting. I don't care to do either, myself, but I think it's a good idea to know what a gun is and how powerful it is....

Angel - that's sweet of you to offer but shipping charges would be silly.  I do appreciate it, though!

Inne - the last time I went to Cyber Candy I spent £45! [sm=eek.gif] AND they were out of Oreos! LOL I did manage to get a year's supply of Life Savers though hehe.  That shop is dangerous for me.
