Has anyone ever felt this way?? -- cheating on your dog...

Oh my gosh, alieliza - did you read my mind??? [:D] I think about the same thing on a daily basis and it has been the main reason behind me not seriously considering a second dog...  Dodger isn't the most trainable breed of dog around so OB, rally, agility and pulling training can take a lot longer than with other breeds (I wouldn't have it any other way)...  But it means that getting a second dog would seriously cut into Dodger's training time and into the prospective dog's training time. It wouldn't be fair to either dog so I will be a solo dog owner for a while (although my Siamese cat is pretty much the second canine anyway[:D])

well, I had my foster dog sport for about a month and a half I think before I finally broke down and brought home another dog. I dont think I will EVER be a one dog household again!!!! It was (speaking past tense because sport is now adopted and the next one comes home monday, so for the next four days I'm back to having only one dog) so nice to be able to put them in my fenced backyard and let them wear each other out, and I didn't have to worry about them being lonely while I was at work because they had each other. I think most dogs need other dogs to play with and I dont have a free dog park near me so the easy answer was to foster two dogs at once, if I had the room I'd have more but two is my limit. I have to admit, charlie gets more one-on-one training now that sport is gone, but thats because she has so much energy that I have to exercise her myself and therefor I'm training her while I walk her or run her in the park. So I strongly encourage a two dog household!!!!

I've always lived in multiple dog households. I think they learn to adapt very quickly. When i lived at home i had a beagle, a jack russell, and a ridgeback. Everything was just fine, i think they enjoyed each other's company. My ridgeback passed away and the jrt and beagle were too old to move away with me, so i got Kaiser. When kaiser was a year old, i decided to get Wyatt. It's the best thing i could do for kaiser. They truly are best friends and hate being apart. However, the first week that wyatt was there, things didn't go too well. kaiser was so spoiled and was not tolerating wyatt. Eventually though, he learned to love him and that's the end.

I cheated on my former dog, Sadie, once. And I felt like a heel.
She always did the shelter fundraiser walks w/me and one year had a major surgery and couldn't go. I took my nephew's boxer with me - the guilt was more than I could bear and didn't go again until this past fall and Sadie was gone over the Bridge and Molly went with me.

I feel that way now. We have always had 3 dogs growing up in my house. Now we are down to one (others have now gone to the bridge) But Blaze was a baby when we got him and the 2 other dogs were 13 and 11 at the time. Now that they both have passed on (illness & age) I feel it is time to get another family dog (Blaze is mine, but every one loves on him. but in the end when I move out he follows). So we are some what talking about a new dog. I feel like Blaze would be mad. But We will still get one once it comes along (no rusing out for one now). Or when I play with other dogs. Say I go away for the weekend to a cottage and Blaze cant come, becuase my friends dogs are guard dogs and ar enot friendly. I feel like I cheated on him by throwing sticks for the two dogs there lol. Its silly.

my situation is way different, i have 2 little girls that need attention too so for me another dog really is not a reasonable option. but even if i didnt have kids i think i would feel weird about having another dog. dh had a sweet rotty when we got berserker and i always felt bad for her, not only did she have to share dh's attention with me, then it was me and a puppy, and on top of it all she got pestered by the psychotic little pup. she took it all pretty well, but i could tell she missed being dh's one and only. i think if i ever have two dogs at once it will be a pair that are used to being together, most likely shelter mates.
