Sadie's designer bag :)

    Sadie's designer bag :)

Sadie wanted to show off her new designer backpack. I use "designer" very loosely seeing as I am the one who made it for her. I've had such a  hard time finding one that I liked and was the right size and not $80! So with $6 fabric and a harness she already had and never really used, I made one from scratch, pattern and all. Enjoy! It's really easy if anyone else wants to know how to make one, you can make whatever size sacks you like! Sadie's can carry 4 beers, OR her own water, bowl, food and tie out while hiking [:D]

From someone who is very domestically-challenged...
    I am soooooo impressed!

but the real question, is Sadie impressed?
    • Gold Top Dog
    That looks great! Good job!

Well...... I'm pretty sure impressed wouldnt be the way she'd describe having to carry all her own stuff now. I know she thinks I should carry it all the time, but in the summer you don't have all the pockets and such to carry everything, this works out better for me [:D] But the bag is velcro removable from the harness so it comes right off during pit stops and breaks, and I made a little "saddle pad" type thing to put under it so it was nice and comfy. Hopefully she wont be too embarased out on the trails with it:)

That bag is gorgeous.  I bet you could sell those to pet stores.

That bag is gorgeous! It looks so professional.

I'd love to hear more about how you made it. I have been looking to get one for Bernie, but like you- didn't want to shell out so much money.

I'll try and explain it but bear in mind that its much harder to explain than it was to make. I started by making each bag seperately. Sadie's is 6 inches wide and 6 in long. and the sides are 3 in at the bottom and 2 1/2 i htink at the top (to make it close a bit at the top) So you cut 5 pieces per bag, a front (6 1/2 x6 1/2) you add the 1/2in for seam allowance, you cut a back which is 6 1/2 wide by 11 1/2 (the back is longer b/c it includes the front flap closure), cut 2 sides 3 1/2in at bottom 3 in at top and 6 1/2 in on the sides, then cut a bottom of 6 1/2" x 3 1/2. Assebly is hard to expalin but the way i made the pattern and figured out how to put it together was but cutting each peice (wihtout seam allowance) out with regular lined paper and taping it together to make sure it worked. It closes with just some velcro (which needs to be sewn on before assembly). So you make 2 of those, and so it sits over the back, I just cut a strip of fabric out to make the bridge and sewed each bag to either end of it. The "saddle pad" is just the canvas sewn right sides together with micro fleece, then turned right side out, pressed and sewn around the edges to make it look pretty. And it all goes together by setting the "pad" velcro on top on the dogs back, then put on the harness and line it up, then you velcro the pack to the saddle pad sandwhiching the harness inbetween. That way the harness can still be used on its own without having velcro sewn on it making it unslightly to use alone. I know that probably sounded complicated but if you really are going to make one I can send better pictures and pictures of the pattern pieces to help it make sense. But again you can make the actual packs bigger or smaller as you wish. The only materials needed are about 1/3 - 1/2 yard of canvas (JoAnns), spool of thread to match or contrast, and about a foot of velro, and of course a harness (one that wont dig in too bad with weight on top of it). Here are some other pics of it take apart. *Remember a dog should only carry weight OVER the shoulders never over the lower back, and never carry more than 30% their body wieght, start small, work your way up. :) Sadies pack full is only about 5-7 lbs.
    the 3 pieces

these connect on either side of the harness

The pad sits under the harness and you line up the velcro, the put the pack on top

    Sadie looks great!

That's amazing - you are so creative! I am not able to do anything crafty but I might be able to convince my Mum to make one!
It is so nice of you to share it with us!

Wow1  Great job you did.  I just started packing with Tank.  He loves it and I'm slowly adding more weight getting ready for spring and after mud season.  This one only put me back $25.00 + shipping.   I wanted orange for the Northeast hunting seasons but they only had blue.  You did a fabuluos job.  Making one didn't even cross my mind.  Now I'm mad at myself...  BTW,  I LOVE your dog.

Thanks! Tank looks like a real trail blazer :) They do have orange ribbon/nylon/cloth strips that you can sew onto your pack to make it more noticable too. Good luck with your backpacking!

That's a great looking bag.  You really should think about selling those.  Your work is fantastic from what I can see.  You could call them Sadie Bags instead of saddle bags.

Of course your model is gorgeous, that helps. :o

Oh that is such a great idea! You really should think about selling the bags, and I love the idea Annie T has for a name: Saddie-bags!!!
    • Gold Top Dog
You should do that! I bet you could get $75 for them on ebay, if you sewed the names on them like that....

Perhaps some interested i-doggers could let you know if we want them!!!
