    Discovering the Inner Wolf

I was at my parents house yesterday, and my mom gave me some soup bones she had that she didn't want, because there wasn't too much meat on them.
    Sierra sure appreciated them!

    Yumyum! Those look good!

Attack dog! Get that bone, Sierra!

Just curious, how often does everyone else give RMBs?
    • Gold Top Dog
    Awww. Yummy bone

I give Blue RMB's at least three times a week or two. I'm holding off until we send my niece back home Monday to give Blue any RMB's. I don't think a baby and RMB's will work out together since Blue likes to give Katie kisses when were not looking,[:-]

It depends on how annoying my dogs are:) I usually give them one on days when they haven't had much outside time, or when I'm making dog food and want them out from under my feet.

has anyone had any problems with breaking teeth on raw bones?
    • Gold Top Dog
I give them at least twice a week, but if they're being especially bothersome they get another, so I can have some breathing room!

I think you mean rec bones, Sierra2002? I give RMBs daily, but the rec bones are whenever I feel like it. I used to give him a new one once a week, and he'd have it for 4-5 days. But the co-op didn't have any the last couple times, so now I'm out and only give when I remember to pick one up at the store.

I'm not sure if I've had an issue with breaking a tooth. Roscoe broke a tooth shortly after we got him, but I don't know how and the vet said it was in poor condition anyway.  His healthy teeth are all fine.

Now THAT'S a happy girl!  Yumbone!

Its things like this that make me glad I found this forum. Before I came here, Sierra's teeth were in such rough shape - she'd have to be knocked out for a teeth cleaning pretty soon if I hadn't started doing something about it.
They're *almost* sparkly white now. It's quite impressive.  [:D]

Sierra, are you telling me that by using the raw bones your dogs teeth have been cleaned up?  Is that correct?  Nigel has had to have his teeth cleaned twice now under anestecia (sp) and it's hard on him as he gets older I would think.  So, by using rmb's I can avoid that?

PS ~ I have already tried to brush their teeth but they are about as cooperative as herding cats that don't want to be herded.

Thats exactly what I'm saying! (and I'm happy to say it [;)])
Before I came to the forum, I was actually trying to use Dentabones and stuff (nasty, I know) but they really did nothing.
So, now I give her about half an hour/day of RMB, and I'm so happy that her teeth are cleaned up.  It only took a little while to take most of the gunk off.

When I first started giving them, I had to really limit her time on them because her gums would actually bleed, just from chewing (and, though i'm kinda ashamed to admit it, when I first gave her a RMB, she had no idea what to do with it!).  She does great now though, and her teeth are pretty close to pearly white!
And no thanks to my vet (who told me to just brush every day).

Does it get the gunk off the back teeth too?

I've found that it does a better job on the back teeth than the front (canines, etc). Sierras canines weren't nearly as bad as the back though, so maybe I just couldn't track it as well.

I just remember taking her for a car ride after a couple weeks of giving her RMBs and it was a bit warm in there... Sierra started panting and I saw her pearly whites. I was really amazed.
