My Mom is in the Hospital

Thanks everyone.  Mom's been sleeping the last couple days she's been home.  Dino is being a good boy.  Unfortunately, my mom hurt her back and ankle when she had her seizure, so she's dealing with that too.  She's mad and upset that she can't take Dino out for a walk because of the back pain and ankle sprain.  She's been good about taking her meds and she made an appt. to see her PCP and a follow up appt. with her neurologist.  She did that without much of a fight, which was surprising *wry grin*.  She didn't want to call work yet - but since I told them she'd be out of work for a few days at least, she can hold off another day and tomorrow she'll be more ready for that call.

Mostly it's the loss of being able to drive for the next 6 months minimum that has her down.  Her sister is coming by tomorrow to visit and bringing her son to cut her lawn (thank goodness that's one thing I don't want to do for her since it'll make my allergies flare up again!).  The visit will do her good.

To say hearing her mental state she was in that day (which we now realize was because of the seizures) and to hear her have a grand mal seizure on the phone was the absolute scariest moment of my life to date.  I'm just glad she was at the hospital for the grand mal seizure and I was glad the folks at Cambridge Hospital were so nice and attentive.  My mom is really my best friend and I'm glad she's going to be ok, even if she's going to have to go through a rough part making some adjustments to her life.

Sharon, I can't even imagine how frightening it was to hear your mother on the phone that day.  It's really fortunate that you're relatively close by and could make arrangements to be with her so soon after her admittance in the hospital.  I know how awful it feels to be too far away to get to someone quickly and/or to be of any help when my mother had emergency surgery a few years ago.  I'm sure your Mom will have a smoother recovery and adjustment period with you and other family and friends nearby to help as much as possible.

I hope her employers are supportive and something can be worked out to accommodate her schedule and commuting needs.

How long will she have to be off her feet due to the ankle sprain?  I know it's not the same as walking him, but at least Dino is small and she can exercise him (and enjoy herself) with some indoor activities where she can remain seated.  He'll be a good snuggle-bug while she's less mobile, too.

Her ankle isn't as bad as her back.  Her ankle is a slight sprain; it's still swollen, but not as bad as it was yesterday.  Her back is the real issue.  She can hobble around the house, but more than that is too much.  I'm here for the week, my brother next week and a neighbor offered to walk him if needed. She hates relying on people.  I told her to think of it as a return for all the times she's helped others out.  Think of it as having your own fleet of personal drivers too (that at least got a chuckle, small, but I'll take it!).  Dino is a really good boy and she can play fetch with him inside too.  He did do a butt tuck zoomie in the house today (granted I was revving him up for that) which made my mom crack up laughing.  He's going to be so good for her!

Sharon, I can hardly imagine how hard this must be for all of you.  I hope her back starts to improve soon.  The no driving thing is so overwhelming and I'm sure she's feeling in shock at all the sudden changes in her life.  You're going through the same emotions from your own point of view and feeling for her at the same time.  I'm glad Dino is providing some laughter.  Sending tons of good thoughts and vibes for all.  (((((((Hugs)))))))

Hi Sharon, so glad there is a diagnosis.  As we all know dealing with the furkids, that is the big thing.  Once we have that, treatment plans can be formed.

I'm so sorry you had that scary phone experience.  On the other hand, what a good thing you were in contact and knew something was happening!

Maybe I missed it as I was reading, but I did get confused as to how you got the diagnosis.  You wrote she had all these tests, all fine.  She was going to have a spinal tap and come home; then next thing, you had the diagnosis.  Sorry if I'm being nosy.  Dealing with issues with my Dad, I always find it interesting how folks reach the diagnosis.

And DINO!  Oh my gosh, it's like it was meant to be, to have this wee rascal in your lives at this point!   So good for all of you, to have this fella present with his energy and antics.  Pets are the BEST stress relievers aren't they?  I hope you find a camera, we want to see more of him in action now that he has settled in.

Sending prayers from RI for your mom, to feel better, to respond well to her meds, and for all her family (you, your brother, Dino) to keep on supporting one another.

They did one last test which was an EEG - which I had thought came back fine, but I was mistaken.  With all the testing, I lost track!  The EEG showed seizure activity.

It was fate with regards to Dino!  Right now, he's rolling around on the couch with his tennis ball and snorting.  I drive her to the shelter this Friday to formally adopt him  Big Smile
