Oh wow Wednesday

Callie, it was AMAZING.  And we were sitting in the SHED!  The $120 EACH tix!  Obvously we didn't pay for them....

Lisa, Mike was a little pickly about meat as a child.  In general tho, both of my boys were really good eaters.....loved veggies, fruits, cheeses and all the healthy stuff kids aren't supposed to like.  FWIW, I think you are doing exactly the right thing taking it slow and easy.  There were sooooo many things my DH wouldn't eat.  If he didn't like his dinner, his mom would get up and make him something else.....he liked peas, corn and butternut squash.  Period.  I just kept putting what I always put on the table, on the table, and occassionally suggested that he might like something.  Over the years, I've created a monster who asks "why so much meat?  Why not more veggies?"  LOL!

Just try to remember....life is not a sprint but a marathon, so slow and steady wins the race.  In a few years I bet you'll be laughing about her long past pickiness!

Gaaah... my mom is being pissy today because we are waiting for my idiot brother in law to drop off my niece. My sister was going to bring her last night, but he said he'd drop her off today because "he misses her." You miss her so much you didn't realize the other week when my mom came to pick her up that she was awake, and you didn't get out of bed for another hour until my mom woke you up (at nearly 11 AM). You miss her so much you typically neglect to feed the kid by the time we get there at 10:30. I could go on there. Anyway, she is pissy because I told her the next time she buys some food in a giant package, she should think about whether it was used the last time. She bought a big thing of Spring Mix Salad. There are 3 of us living here, plus the 19 month old who comes sometimes for a  few days. The last time she bought something similar, about 80% was thrown out. There was one type of lettuce I liked, and that was the only one I ate. However, that package had the heads separated. This is mixed. I won't eat this mix. My niece will eat a few pieces from it. She said, "we'll eat it with the chicken (which she plans to make tonight or tomorrow)". Ummm... no, we won't. Had you gotten some romaine lettuce, I would have eaten it. I was going to  eat some, then I looked at the package and saw what it was, and had waffles instead. I just threw out a few things of expired yogurt. My mom doesn't believe in having any clue what you will do with the food when you buy it, using things up before you buy more, checking to see what you have before you buy (hello tons of cans of tomatoes), or cleaning things up and putting away leftovers in a timely manner, putting away groceries (which there is no place to put because she buys constantly but rarely uses anything up). I typically don't eat the stuff she makes, because it's usually horrible, so I don't feel any obligation to clean it up right away. I'd like to be able to ignore it completely, but sometimes I can't and I have to clean it up. She was pissy yesterday because there was a mess of dishes from stuff she made in the sink. I did not eat one bite of it (again, because it was completely revolting, she knew nobody else in the house would eat it, yet chose to cook for twice as many as are here) but I got yelled at for the mess. Ummm... when I do anything, I clean up immediately or I will get hell. Is it that hard to run some hot water and soap in a pan right away.  Sorry, I'm feeling ranty because I got chewed out because she's pissy with my Brother in Law and can't actually take it out on him.

Glenda - that sounds like a wonderful time and you guys certainly deserved it.

Lisa - good luck with the steak tacos. If Riley won't eat them, send them my way - yum!!

I've been dreaming about Shane a lot lately and dreamed he fainted but I thought he was dead. It shook me up enough that I went on a search to see if there was any type of heart surgery available. UC Davis has a sophisticated cardiology program but specifically noted that sugery for SAS hasn't been shown to prolong the dog's life, so they don't do it. I knew the reality from day one but sometimes I just have a hard time accepting it. Sad

I didn't know our institution had a west coast branch, because it sure looks like we work at the same place! Confused

What did you have done to your ears?  Would you do it again?  I spent last week in the ocean, and while the water in my ears isn't moving any more, my hearing has definitely been affected.  If i rub my fingers together , i cannot hear them.  What's really weird is when i take a shower, the noise is really loud - sounds like my head is hollow (it's not). Also, when i chew it's so loud.

I ruptured both of my eardrums either diving or snorkeling, I am not sure which. During snorkeling, I was free diving so it could have happened then too. This is because I didn't equalize my ears well enough when I descended. It can happen in 6 ft of water if you are not careful, have a sinus infection, allergies, etc. When I went to the ear nose and throat specialis, he did a procedure (can't recall the name) where he made an incision through my ear drums to drain the fluid out of my middle ears. It had to be done to prevent infection and more serious injury. I don't know if that is the case with you. You might just have water in your ear, stuck behind some wax or something. You could get some swim ear stuff and try it see if that relieves it. Peroxide will disolve wax. I hesitate to give any advice thoug other than you should prob go see a doctor before doing anything since it has been several days and it hasn't cleared up. Good luck!

Holy cow finally this conference is over! Now I am waiting for Mindy - Baily's mom- to pick me up so we can have a beer & dinner! Very happy to meet another iDogger!

In other news I am scheduled for an on-site interview for the contract job. I was told I wouldn't hear anything until Friday at the earliest so I am hoping it's a good sign.

Karen - what conference is it that you're attending. Yes, it seems like a very good sign that you're getting an earlier than planned interview. Wishing you the best of luck with that. Say "hi" to Mindy.

I'm really struggling to get through this afternoon. It's feels like the time is ticking by so slowly and all I can think about is food but it's only because I'm sooooo bored.

Well, the steak tacos have been eaten.  Well, kind of.  I didn't put the steak in the tortilla - she does better when she can see all the ingredients.  So she ate three pieces of steak and her tortilla.  I didn't even bother with the chimcurri sauce since it was pretty garlicy.  She wasn't big on the steak, but at the three pieces required to get an ice cream so she was rewarded with a chocolate blizzard.

Charlie was pumped because he got the rest of her steak Big Smile

Genius brother in law delivered my niece at 5:30 after my sister called and asked if she had been delivered. She was delivered completely distraught, starving and in a diaper (she has been potty trained during the day for 3 weeks now, mostly on a schedule, but she sometimes will say she needs to go). When she got in i saw the diaper and said we needed to get rid of her baby pants. He didn't like that, and whined to my sister. He raced out the door so fast without even bothering to say bye to her (and she never cares when he leaves). I got a call from my sister about commenting on the diaper. Like he expects me to apologize. He doesn't realize I'm not my sister, and I don't apologize when I'm right. I forgive lazy before I forgive lying.

just a tiny little suggestion.....you might not want to put ice cream or dessert on an elevated level by making it a "reward".  I can fully understand your almost desparation....my stepson was the ultimate in picky eaters.  I'm honestly not being critical....

Whew!  SIL and BIL left today, so our normal routine returns tomorrow.  It's been a very hectic few days with houseguests, a flooring/tiling project in progress, a couple major deadlines at work, getting to bed too late . . . to say I'm tired tonight is a huge understatement.  I actually feel kind of ill from trying to keep my eyes focused all day.

All the posts about picky eaters remind me of my childhood.  My sister and I didn't like anything -- just basic stuff like chicken, hamburgers, potatoes, and corn.  I realized much later that it wasn't just us being uncooperative or stubborn.  It also was because my Mom is not a good cook (I know that's not the case for you, Lisa -- but there isn't a cooking gene in my family!).

For years, I thought fish was frozen fish sticks or canned tuna (always a go-to during Lent).  When I was about 20, I had salmon prepared by a gourmet cook (fresh, not frozen, with a dill sauce).  I thought, "This is fish?  Well, I would've eaten more of it if it tasted this good!"  As for veggies --- I only knew them as mushy things that came from a can or boiled to death.  I was an adult before I had fresh veggies roasted or sauteed with tasty seasonings.  Heck, now I even eat brussel sprouts and asparagus!

Glenda -- how cool that you had such awesome seats at Tanglewood!  My mother has gone to a few performances there.  Unfortunately, I never got there before we moved away from the area.

Speaking of ice cream... we went for ice cream after dinner too. We don't actually buy ice cream for my niece. She doesn't eat enough to be worthwhile buying her food anywhere yet (though the other week bought her a side salad in a restaurant). Anyway, we got her a bag of freeze dried strawberries. The place we went is a farm, and has a store, and a few nice swingsets outside. They somehow are set up with a vendor, and the vendor has them there for the kids to play on, and to try to sell them. They've also got a goldfish pond that she loved too. We got ice cream, because I had some coupons, so it was free. We were going to give her about a spoonful of ice cream on a cone. She absolutely would not wear a bib, so she had no ice cream. My mom was basically begging the kid to eat ice cream. Ummm... it's ice cream. If she won't listen, sit down, and wear her bib, she doesn't get to have it. Sucks for her. She had her bag of strawberries, so it's not like she had nothing, or was going to go hungry. There's no reason to beg her to eat ice cream.

The poor kid was so mad at me... I gave her a bath, and I took away her  underwear. She's in bed now with her underwear on top of her diaper, because she insisted upon having her underwear.
