    Apparently this makes me odd...

I don't mind Dodger's paper shredding.. At all. It's not a big deal for me. But when there are people over and they see him with a newspaper, they let me know (which I appreciate!) and I'll tell them that it's ok for him to have it, I get an odd look....

If needed I can take the piece of paper away from him, or he'll bring it to me to see if he can have it. But usually if it's just a flyer or junk mail, I don't care. He's not eating it either. Just shredding. And yes I have put together a confetti paper just to make sure. LOL.

Also I don't mind his thieving stuff (bottles, smoke packs, lighters, my shoes!) since he always either brings it straight to me, or brings it to my room to place on my bed. Granted I could do without the empty food cans on my bed when someone misses the garbage can and doesn't notice. But overall, there are worse things he could be getting into. (no he doesn't dumpster dive thank god!)

And he doesn't steal food off plates (while supervised)

So tell me! Am I odd??

wait.. do I want the answer to that....

I don't think it makes you odd... I can understand the weird looks you get from people that watch your dog shred newspaper... because it's not one of those, "common dog-things". But as long as he not ingesting it, no harm, no foul. The cigarette packs and the lighter kind of scare me a bit... if your dog accidentally swallowed something dangerous... it might not turn out well... You are right, there are worse things he could be getting into. I don't think it makes you odd though. :) As long as no harm is coming to your dog, who cares! Haha. All dogs, just like people, have their own personalities and different things that they like to do/play with. :) Just watch him, and make sure he's not getting into anything dangerous. :)

The lighter stealing does kinda bother me but he's learned that it's an instant trade for something better. But generally he just prances around with it and shows me what he's got. If it's a smoke pack, I'll ask him to "Lemme see" and he'll spit it out. Big Smile I'm in the process of teaching him to bring the packs to the people who do smoke. LOL.

No, not odd. I let my dogs do things that other people think they shouldn't. However, I would be in the crowd of people who would stop him from doing those things. I would just worry about him shredding a paper I actually needed. I'd really worry about the other stuff though, the cans, the lighters, the cigarettes. The worst that happens from the paper is that you lose something you needed. Even if he accidentally ingests it, there is no harm. The other things, if he accidentally ingests them, they can be a problem. He can cut his mouth on the cans.

I'd probably give him a shredding box and let him shred stuff I didn't care about, or needed shredded so that I didn't lose stuff I didn't want shredded.

See that's the funny thing, he steals the cans, smoke packs, lighters and paper off a table and he'll find someone to bring it to. He doesn't actually chew these items. Newspapers he shreds as soon as he grabs them. Lol.

It would all be solved if you just beat whoever left them in reach.

LOL! Sadly Dodger is now tall enough to reach the tables. So when he was smaller, they were outta reach.

This is why I suggest the beatings. Gotta adapt to the growing dog or getting beat.

I like that! Wink Hmmm.. I wonder where my beating stick went... Ya know, just in case..

I think many dog owners teach a dog what is the dog's and what is not.  This helps the dog have good house manners, be it at home, or visiting - humans and other dogs.

Much as we try to teach our children to be polite and not take what is someone else's without permission, we do the same with dogs.

Remember, you will live this doggie for many years, and through many life changes - not only of your own, but also of friends.

I also would not want a dog picking up a lighter, ever.

All my dogs have 2 sets of manners. One for the home and one for visiting. I have higher standards for when we're out and about. The lighter stealing is one I will be correcting as I see it. But really in general, I don't mind.. As with smoke packs and cans and such, I'm gonna teach him to throw them out.

I didn't say clearly what I meant, lol.  I was trying to say, since many owners do things one way, anyone doing things another way makes them stop and think!  Doesn't mean it is wrong, per say, just different.  And yes, many folks will see it as odd, but that is their issue not yours, lol!

Putting stuff in the trash, lol, now THAT will get some looks -- and smiles!

My friend's old dog used to take everyone's coffee cup from the shop and put in the garbage as asked Smile
