    Need help with odor problem

    Hello all,

My wife and i just bought a maltipo for my daughter who just graduated college and I have a problem with the natural odor of this dog.

She is 9 weeks old and is trained to go to the BR outside which she faithfully does.  The problem is that I have an odor/ smell of dog in my house but is really noticeable in the downstairs bathroom where she sleeps in her cage at night.

It is not urine smell.  I notice that after we put her out in the morning to do her thing, that the morning dew makes her smell worse.  It's like a musty dog smell.  My daughter and wife gave her a bath  2 days ago and the smell was not as strong that day but the past few days it is back to what it was.

I feel that it is just general dog smell.

My wife has cleaned the bathroom everyday and it smells good for a while and then back to the same smell.  Is there something we can clean with, spray in the bathroom, etc ?

Please help me, I am somewhat embarrased when company comes over.  What can I do ?

    Thanks.

    Jim

What are you feeding him/her?  Poor quality dog foods will cause a dog to smell more than normal.  Also thyroid problems will cause this too.

Otherwise, baking soda shampoos will help, but do not bath him/her more than once every 2 week or you'll dry his/her coat out.  Also rinse really well or your dog will become itchy.

    jojo,

We are feeding her what the breeder gave us. We do not give her scrapes from the table, etc.

We also were told that we should not bathe her more then once every 3 -4 weeks and use a shampoo that has omega 3 & 4 oils in it.

By the way, you mentioned baking soda. We have a container in the fridge to keep unwanted odors out of the fridge.  Would ;putting a opened box of baking soda outside of her cage help the odor ?

    Thanks.

What did the breeder tell you to feed it?  By the way it's Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which should already be in the puppy food and do nothing for the dog topically (on the coat in a shampoo).  Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids are found in a variety of foods (fish, seed oils, chicken fat).   That would be pretty smelly in a shampoo.

I always recommend bathing no more than you have to, so 3-4 weeks is good too.

I wonder if the smell is anal gland related? That can be a rather obnoxious odor which lingers.
Sometimes skin disorders can be smelly too. Might want a vet to rule something like that out. My sister had a golden who had multiple skin allergies and he had quite an odor about him. Just petting him would make your hand smell.
And sometimes dogs simply smell like dogs.

I'd be careful about sprinkling baking soda around the cage.  Baking soda can cause serious tummy up sets if you pup licks it up.  There are sprays you can use.  I like Pet Ordor and Stain Eliminator.  You can find this product on line or at some small feed stores and if you have a Pet Supplies "Plus" in the area.

But seriously consider the food thing.  When I rescued my dog he was being fed kibbles and bits and, man, did he smell.  I switched to Nutro Natural Choice and what a difference and there are many other good foods out there besides this one.  A good sign that it is a high quality food it that you can't buy it in the grocery store.

Also, look to see if your little guy has an ear infection.  Dark brown stuff in the ear is a sign that he has one.  Ear infections smell.

Don't puppies have that pup smell that goes away as they get older??  I'm just asking because anytime someone I know has a puppy the odor seems to be there when the dog is young.

This could be completely off target, but first I would check that you are feeding a high quality food.  Both of my dogs do get musty outside sometimes but it goes away in no time.  Harley sometimes will smell for days and what I have learned is that when he sort of stinks for more than a few minutes, his ears are dirty.  When this happens, I know it is time for a good ear cleaning and then everything is fine!

I remember that Louise definitely had puppy odor the first few weeks.   Also, there's that lovely pee smell from the urine that dries on the hair around the genitals that my vet told me goes away as they get older.

At 9 weeks, this little guy is due for his first round of vaccines (parvo and distemper ONLY) so he needs to see the vet anyhow.  Just to be safe.  But, honestly, I'm thinking that whatever the breeder sent home with you foodwise is the major cause of the odor.  It's amazing what a difference a truely good quality food can make in a dog.  When my two older shepherds were pups, my vet told me to feed Purina Large Breed Puppy......not only did they poop like horses, the SMELLED like dogs.  After having cockers for soooo many years, I was totally unprepared for dog smell.  Once I changed them to a truely excellent quality food, and homecooked, hmmmmmm, no more doggie smell.  I have SIX german shepherds now and even my pickiest sister can't smell "dog" when she walks into my home.

Puppies smell great! Lol this is about the only time they have such an awesome smell. Puppy breath and puppy stink (which really doesn#%92t smell at all no matter what the food!) Lizzie was on Beneful when she was that age and she smelled lovely J I guess its just a matter of preference. But yes I do notice that when she is in her crate all night long when I go into the guest room there is definitely a dog smell which DH hates but I don#%92t mind too much. I must admit it#%92s a tad bit stinky though. Can you put her in another room? If shes crated in the bathroom a small place will likely make the smell seem worse.

I usually open all the windows and leave the door open when I take her out in the morning. I also have like 3 blankets for her. I use one, and wash the other two. I change the blankets weekly so she gets a fresh blanket and it helps minimize odors because the blankets don#%92t get much time to collect smell.

There are doggy colognes and doggy sprays which you spray on furniture and bedding so it doesn#%92t smell much. When I mop the floor I remove her blanket and mop the crate floor and once that#%92s dry I put the blanket back. I also have a nice smelling candle that I turn on for a few hours. Hope that helps a bit!

P.S. Yes a good quality food will also help, stick around and im sure you will learn A LOT on this subject, I know I have!

Zeus, my sisters Dobie x  Aussie had that issue too Jim. From day one to his last day on this earth nearly 11 years later. It was worse after activity and always in the morning. Bathing does not really help aside from the short term, like you mentioned. It was just an aroma that came from the very pores of his skin...nothing to do with elimination habits. Some breeds like Bloodhounds and Shar Pei also have 'odors'. "Hair" breeds like Yorkies and Maltese can at times have that lank dirty hair smell if not bathed often.

Food notwithstanding....some dogs...like some PEOPLE...have a stronger tendency to have body odor. Sebum, sweat, etc are produced by both...and the amount varies dog to dog.

If her skin looks alright...not overly greasy or dry. You can try changing foods...but you also have to consider that this may simply be the way this particular dog...smells.

Oh and Febreze is a good product...it can be sprayed on dog beds, furniture, etc...

Not sure if those ionic things work but they claim to reduce pet odors in the home as well.

I have an air purifier (not sure if it has an ionic setting), but it definitely does make the air smell nicer.

Thanks all for the responses.  This is the first for a in the house pooch.  I have always had a Golden Retriever but since mine passed away last year I could not get another and go through loosing him/her.  He was my best friend and was with me 15 years.

Anyhow, I have the name of the food... It is Royal Canin, MINI puppy 33.

I never knew that you could use it around pets, bedding, etc.
