How long did it took you to adopt a dog...

Every rescue has different rules, and my adoption experiences were different everytime. Grey, Charlie, and Deuce came from shelters so adopting them was only a matter of going to the shelter, filling out paperwork, and taking them home. I did visit Grey several times before while convincing Brett we NEEDED another dog. When he finally agreed, we brought Brown over to meet Grey, they hit it off instantly, and both jumped in the backseat of the car together.
 
It took about a month to adopt Brown from a rescue. I contacted his foster mom, and she let us visit her fosters. We checked out all of them, and Brett really liked Brown. So we visited him again the next weekend and decided he was the one we wanted. We scheduled a home visit for the following week, and the next weekend, we brought him home.
 
 

From seeing Bella on petfinder and sending an e-mail to bringing her home (which was a MAJOR concession on their part, they don't usually let adopters pick up dogs, preferring to deliver), it was about 21 days, I think.  If they had delivered her, it would have been 28 days.

That included a few e-mails/phone calls interviewing each other (us finding out more about Bella and them finding out more about us), a visit by us to Bella & a home visit by a rescue representative.

Wow, I didn't know it would take that long. I know that the shelter, you tend to get it after you're done with the paperwork. But I didn't expect foster to have a longer process.
The rescue center that I'm in the process of adopting doesn't do home visits (only for special-needs animals). But they tend to focus more on the adopting parent(s) and the animal. (just to make sure they both are compatible with each other.)
I guess I have to set myself to wait longer than I expected. (I sound impatient [X(])

I was able to take Georga home the day I saw her. I went to the foster home to see anouther dog i had my eye on but she had already beed adopted. The foster mom thought i might like anouther dog there so of corse I fell in love with her. I really wanted a basset hound but now I've found Georga instead. The lady was the one in charge of the whole foster program so she had every paper there I needed to fill out there. Georga was already spayed, micro shiped, obedience trained and up to date on all vaccination so there was no need to waite to take her home with me.

I answered a quick survay and we went over it together she ask what if I move and what if I add a baby to the home and every question that seemed to make shure the dog's safty came first. Then I signed a contract that for any reason I don't want the dog she would be returned in good health to the foster home. I was given a month trial with Georgia to make shure she was the dog for me. If not I could try agean with anouther dog till a perfet match is made. I didn't need the trial, Geroga was right at home as soon as we drove away. I keepted her name, Georgia, was strange at first call something the name of a state but now I think it's a wonderful name.

It took me all of 6 hrs.  I arrived at the shelter on a Sunday morning at the time they opened 11:00 am and walked out with Romeo by 5:00 pm.  He was up to date on all his shots, neutered, and microchipped.  They almost did not let me take him home that day because he had a bad case of kennel cough, but it all worked out well.

For Millie, it was a few hours. We went in, filled out forms, and then found out which dogs were cat safe. Then we went in to look at some dogs. We'd come back to the counter, ask for the full profile on ones we liked, and then ask to take a dog out. Once we were pretty sure we wanted her, we took her outside for a walk, then came back in to tell them she was the one we were taking. My mom finalized the paperwork and paid for her. Then they took her and gave her a microchip and a rabies shot, and we went home.
When we went to get Max, we emailed an application to adopt on Friday night, then we went to see him at Petsmart on Saturday morning. We narrowed it down to two dogs , then we went home to get Millie to test her to see which one she liked better. She picked him, so we wandered around the store to get supplies for him while my mom finalized his paperwork. So in total, from mailing the application to bringing him home, it was maybe 18-21 hours.

i just went to the pound and got gus. i researched it online before i went. the particular pound i went to had all the available dogs and cats online so you could see the breeds and pictures. i saw his pic and feel in love. i drove up the pound paid the $50 and took him home on the spot.

On the day that I submit my application, I asked if she(dog) be at the mobile adoption, But they said she wouldn't be there.
I don't want to wait too long and get a negative answer. When I could've search elsewhere, instead waiting. This wait is somewhat bothering me. I hope they contact me soon, so I can either move on, or prepare her to come home. I think I should email them again.

It took me about two-three weeks before I got Mika, but it would have been a much shorter wait if not for inconvenient schedules on the part of both myself and her foster mom's. I found the organization on the Internet, called up and set up an appointment with the foster mom (who was vice-president of the organization), then dropped by and fell in love with Mika. The interview was held over the phone the first time I called and more questions were asked when I dropped by the foster home. Mika was already spayed (part of the organization's policy), vaccinated, everything. A few days later, Mika's foster mom came to my house for a house-check and gave me an adoption contract. A couple of weeks later, Mika was delivered to the house, where I paid for her and signed the contract.  

I would like to say Thanks for wantig to adopt a dog in need. Also something to think about most rescue are run by volunteers and I know that most of us have jobs,families.our own pets and responsibilities aswell as helping with the rescue. So sometimes it can be a bit longer process getting everything taken care of prior to letting a dog go home with someone. When someone submits and application to adopt from PRO we try to respond within a week with a follow up call to see if the person is still interested. Myself personally if someone is in and extreme rush to get a dog from us that set off some red flags to me that maybe I need to be more cautious. Deciding on bringing a dog home is a life commitment and needs to be made sure that it is best for the dog and the potential adopters. My sister, my parents and I went to the shelter to look at the puppies.  When we got there, my mum took one look at Zoe, who was then very quiet and about a year old, and said that one.  A couple days later we got to bring her home.  Now a year later, Zoe has found her voice and has completely entrenched herself in our hearts.
 
My sister found Bear on the internet and somehow managed to convince my parents that we had to rescue this poor, abused dog.  I called the shelter and spoke with a lady who was very relunctant to let me adopt him, since I hadn't any previous experience with abused dogs.  It took some doing, but she finally said I could come look at him over the weekend.  So, my sister and I went Friday, visited Bear, and we were back again Monday bringing him to his new home.
 
We adopted Zoe and Bear a month apart, so they were separated for the first two weeks until they were spayed/neutered/and healed.  Now they get on famously!
 
Despite the haste in which my dogs were adopted in, they turned out to be wonderful dogs and are now irreplaceable members of my family!

We had pretty much the same experience way back when we adopted Mick.  PAL was having an adoption day at a local boarding kennel, where we fell in love with Mick, filled out the paperwork, paid the adoption fee and took him home.

I am thankful as well to come on this forum to find information about guides to buying/adopting a dog.
At first, I was thinking about buying a dog, becasue I thought that was the only way to get a dog, But I was wrong. After being on this forum for a while, I found out that buying a dog from a petstore is a bad thing and found out that dogs can be adopted from the shelter or rescue center, Which has alot of benefits.

The Rescue center that I found the adoptable dog was on Hopalong Rescue website. (Please don't tell them that I'm impatient hehe just kidding)

Right now, (not when after reading your post hehe) I'm just going with the flow. At first I wanted to have it asap because my mother is on vacation from work, and I thought it a good idea for the whole family to spend time with the dog. But now I have alot of time to think about this. But I hope I can adopt her.

On the day I actually went to get her (I had gone to the SPCA the day before and saw her, but someone else was planning to adopt her already), I went, played, and turned in my application quickly.  Then, since I was going to be a first time dog owner, and dachshunds are stubborn dogs, they suggested I go to a dog basics class they run on Saturdays.  So, I had to wait 3 days, went to the class and then got her right after.  Those 3 days gave me time to get stuff I needed for her too!
