There are alot of smaller dogs out there. The absolute best thing for you to do, if you want to spend time with dogs, is to volunteer at a local animal shelter. Then you will learn alot more about the dogs and in the process you'll also be helping some dogs by being friends with them.
What the people on this board are saying to you is that having a dog is a very large commitment. What this means is alot less time for studying, friends, games, or even sports. This always requires the entire family to be involved in the care of the dog. If your family was careless or not up to the task before, then they probably do not want to deal with it now.
So most of us think that perhaps you should wait until you will are a bit older and more mature to take care of and train a dog.
