You might want to check with them.  It just seems to me that as long as he keeps his Canadian citizenship, he should be able to keep getting those checks. I'm sure that all the U.S citizens that retired in Mexico are still able to get their disability, social security, etc. as long as they're still U.S citizens.

In order to become a citizen of the US you must surrender any citizenship to any other country, you must pledge allegiance to the US above any other country as well. The only way he could get dual citizenship would be if he was a US citizen first and then became a Canadian citizen, or has had it from birth (one of his parents were American and one was Canadian)

If someone is receiving a disability check, whether it's mailed or put into direct deposit, wouldn't that continue no matter where the person moved? Or is he not getting disability right now?

You still have to report your legal residence.

Yes, FL is one of the highest unemployment rates in the US.  As of Nov 2010, it was 12.0%, ranking 4th highest behind Nevada (14.3%), and California and Michigan (both 12.4%).  Moving to FL for work is a bad idea, imo.

A question just popped into my mind.  If someone is receiving a disability check, whether it's mailed or put into direct deposit, wouldn't that continue no matter where the person moved? Or is he not getting disability right now?

Typically with most disability (and there are different kinds, even in the US) you periodically have to "prove" your disability continues.  It's extremmely rare in the US that disability is granted on any sort of permanent basis (military injuries are a possible exception but that's a big different thing).

See the whole premise of disability is that you are literally NOT able to be employed.  Not that you don't want to, or that it's "hard" but that you can NOT.   As many people as scam the system they do try to make sure it doesn't happen.

If you change your country of residence it's an entirely different thing.  I would doubt *highly* that disability would continue into living in another country -- because if you think about it the premise is you are being compensated to help you live HERE.  But country A isn't going to give someone money to spend/live in Country B, because disability isn't a guarantee - it's a benefit.

When you're talking about moving from country to country -- ALL countries have rules and regulations about immigration.  how long you can "stay" is you are simply on a visitor's visa.  But countries are VERY wary of welcoming someone here who they already know isn't self-supportive.  Taxpayers in any country take a pretty dim view of supporting someone who isn't contributing in any way to that country.

Also -- just because you become a 'resident alien' somewhere doesn't mean you will become a citizen.  David's been here 14 years but he has no intention of becoming a citizen and renouncing his British citizenship.  He pays taxes here and social security.  It's expected when you Immigrate.

Part of the whole immigration hassle in this country right now is all based on the fact that there is so much heartburn because *some* people try to come here and then not work (despite the fact that a whole lot of people are working hard and contributing).  That's only part of the problem but it's made far more difficult now because so many Americans are out of work.

And honestly if you know someone who is dishonestly taking advantage of the disability/social security system and is getting benefits illegally they ought to be reported.  It's just plain wrong.

Well I finally got him to agree to staying in Canada. Thank god. There's just to much hassle to moving outside the country.

Callie: I agree that it is wrong to take advantage of the system. Many people here on the coast do it but the welfare office here doesn't care. Yes these people have been reported but nothing has happened.

    Agree!

There are people here (as mentioned above) that commit fraud and get benefits illegally ... and sometimes you see officials appear not to care.  But it ultimately drags everyone down ... and I'm sure there is "reporting" and then there may be criteria for "reporting" that aren't known ... it's sad to see the system eroded.

Glad you've had better luck talking to him.
