    Michael Vick wants a dog...

Should he be allowed to have one or not?

    • Gold Top Dog

     No. Never.

No way!  I'm reading a book about his dogs.  The things he did to the losing dogs was nothing short of sadism.  I believe a person can change but I'm not convinced that he really knows what he did was wrong on so many levels.

WHAT???  Let him have a chia pet!  or a stuffy.  But a real live dog???  HELL-O NO!!  NEVER!

I saw that interview yesterday and wanted to puke. Apparently, he wants one for his children and he really misses having a dog.  I guess he misses the sounds of dogs screaming in pain.

Wasn't this addressed at his trial?  I would think his judge would have included "NO DOGS EVER" as part of his sentence.

I am going to present a contrarian  view here.  People compartmentalize their lives. It is possible that if he had a dog as a house pet, especially for children, that he would be a loving and gentle owner.   A TV special showing how humans live with dogs showed an Asian community where dog was on the menu, and showed a butcher preparing meat.  He would throw scraps to his pet dog, the one that lived with him.  It may be that some puppy millers have personal pets that live good lives.  When animals are looked on as live stock, to be used for profit, it is easier to mistreat them, even though most farmers treat their livestock as well as possible.  The animals you know personally become special and are treated differently.

That being said, I don't want him in my house or near my dog.

    No, never again.

If someone can separate the suffering they cause to an animal they don't consider their pet from the love they feel for their personal pets, that's a sick person, IMO.  Pain is pain and it doesn't make a person worthy of owning a pet if they cause or allow animals in their care to suffer.

If his kids want a dog so bad, maybe they should start with one of these -

That way, when they get sick of it, the dog won't end up on a chain in the yard... all they have to do is take the batteries out Wink

He has also received his first endorsement since getting out of prison.  Woodbury Nissan in New Jersey is using him in commercials.  The article I read said that the dealership had only heard positive comments from the public.  That was enough to prompt me to send them an e-mail letting them know that I felt it was disgusting that they were using him as a spokesperson.  The first quote is their reply, the second quote is my response back to them.  Feel free to google the dealership and let them know what you think.

"Thank you for contacting us all the way from Green Springs to voice your opinion.  We at Woodbury Nissan respect the work Michael Vick does with Humane Society of the United States.  As a role model for many young people, Michael Vick was selected by The Human Society of the United States to share his story in an effort to reach at-risk youth. We too, support his role in their crusade to end dogfighting and other forms of animal cruelty."

"If you took the time to do a little research, he is court required to attach his name to the HSUS which is a group much like PETA whose agenda is to ultimately make it illegal for anyone to own a dog as a pet.  So your reply only reaffirms my opinion of your business.  I pity anyone in your employ or family who holds this idiot up as a role model of any sort."

Well, yeah, Johnny, that WAS generous.  I could have said a BROKEN Chia Pet or a stuffy my crew have finished with! Devil

Unfortunately, Vick's probation is only for three years.  It is during that time that he is court ordered not to own a dog.  I don't know what happens after that.  I think that unless the judge of his trial and sentencing bans Vick from owning a dog for life, that there isn't much anyone else is going to be able to do about it.  I can't imagine any reputable breeder having anything to do with Vick.  But, heaven knows, there are dogs out there not getting such advocacy.  I think it's going to end up, at some point, that Vick can get a dog.  Heaven help the poor dog is all I can say.  At least maybe he will be in the public eye enough that there is some "supervision" of sorts.  Maybe that could be court ordered.  I don't think even football fans could look away from any future animal abuse by Vick.  Vick would lose everything.  I'm hope that's enough of a deterent when the time comes that he gets a dog.  Because, I think in spite what people who love dogs think, I think Vick is going to end up being able to get a dog.

The real problem is that the penalty for animal abuse in this country is pathetic.  Vick should have paid more dearly for what he did.  The short time he spent in prison was not "enough" of a penalty.
