Food Processors?!

    Food Processors?!

Who uses them? What do you use them for? Should I get one? How's that for rapid fire questioning?Stick out tongue Seriously though, I've been contemplating purchasing, but I've never used one or seen one used, so I'm not sure if getting one is worth it. However, I like kitchen gadgets, particularly ones that might make cooking/prepping a bit easier!

I'm a bit wierd, so remember that as you read my response.

Yes, I have a food processer, and I do use it for pureeing primarily.  I also use it sometimes for grinding meat if I want to make pasties. I actually LIKE chopping veggies so I don't use it for that, altho it's very good at that function.  Honestly, I might use it more were it not bulky, and rather difficult to clean.  It does make quick work of blending a sauce nicely, although a blender would do that too.

    Probably not much help......

Glenda, that's a lot of help actually. I'm weird too and I LOVE chopping veggies. For Xmas or my bday one year, my significant other got me a really GOOD set of quality knives. I love those knives and chopping stuff up with them. It's actually therapeutic for me. A way to wind down and relax. Yes, weird I know. I blend sauce in a blender as well, which was why I was asking, because I wasn't sure a processor would do anything for me that I don't already do on my own (and enjoy doing or already have a gadget for).

I actually saw a commercial that says chopping is NOT relaxing......kind of ticked me off.  It is for me!

Honestly, when my dogs were still getting homecooked, you couldn't have taken my food processor away from me...would have had to pry it from my cold dead hands.....but now that I don't have that need for it, it really doesn't get used often.  And to be very honest, a lot of that is simply that it's a pita to clean it.

What?! Seriously though, I'm glad to have found another like minded person when it comes to chopping! Like last night, I had a long day at work, and chopping up veggies for salad was my form of meditation. I felt much better after those salads were prepared.

If they are a PITA to clean, then I'm definitely not leaning toward one after all. I don't like things that are a pain to clean.

It's not that hard to clean in the dishwasher, but it does take up a lot of room in there!  I only use mine if I'm making large quantities of something, which doesn't happen often anymore.  But when my family was home, I used it a lot.

I'm a gadget person also, and one of my favorite new items is an immersion blender for pureeing soups and sauces.  Smaller and less messy than a blender...and inexpensive as well!  Think it was around $30...

Ooooh an immersion blender?! I might take a look into that. Especially for $30....

See, mine IS difficult to clean, but that doesn't mean all of them are.  Mine doesn't really fit on the top shelf of the dishwasher and that's where I'm supposed to put it.

I think I may be going through a minimalistic phase too.....my stuff has been in storage forever it seems and I've learned to get along just fine without all the kitchen toys and now don't see much need for them.  That will very likely change very quickly when I can finally afford to get my stuff out of storage!

It's a stick thingy with the blades on one end.  You can put it right into your cooking pan to puree, and just rinse off to clean.  No extra things to wash!

I agree with Marty....I've got one of those too....in storage!  It's a very nice toy!

I wish I could send you mine. I never have used it. Not even once...in years. Too many parts, blade, crap to keep and store. Once you unpack the box it just explodes into this huge MESS. I don't even know what half of the attachments DO.

I use a knife, or a blender. LOL.

I used mine all the time for making fresh salsa, guacamole or pico de guio.  It's great for chopping onions, peppers and other things that need to be diced for many of the foods I grew of eating.  Also great for crushing ice.  My mom always uses hers a lot, so when I moved out of the house she gave me her old one and bought herself a new one.

When I had a pet iguana I would use the processors to prepair food for the little guy. Same with a turtle I once fostered a few fosters back and even made a few dishes for the hedghog.  But I guess if you don't have an exotic pet then that's not really useful advice.

My Mom always used an empty Spam can...washed out, and label removed, sharp edge down. It did a GREAT job and it sure took up a lot less room in the cabinets!

I have one of the smaller ones and it has served it's purpose well.  It is really nice to have when I need it for a big batch of guacamole, or chicken salad or salsa or anything else I might want to chop of very fine.  On a regular daily basis, I do my own chopping and I tend to like large chuks.  So the smaller one has worked really well for me b/c it still accomplishes what I need without taking up a ton of room.

Gina, the Spam can thing is a great idea!

I tried the slap chop thing "as seen on TV" (sold by the Shamwow guy) but it bacame far too messy and even more of a pain to clean despite what you see on TV.  It also went dull really fast and jamed so I tossed it out.  The cheese grater it came with was also crap.
