Top 5 Breeds You'd Own

What about Cockers? I know Cockers with some sort of hunting titles. I certainly believe their mom. I train with her every week, LOL. I will have to ask her, on Thursday.

Sure, Spaniels and Pointers too get AKC hunting titles.  Then you have the Hounds which also compete in hunt type events.

    German Shepherd Dog

    Doberman

    Smooth Collie

    Rottweiler

Ibizan Hound (Okay so, I just WANT one!)

I love these kinds of threads and seeing what appeals to other people as far as breeds go. Here is my current list... sometimes it changes, but not majorly. :-)

    - Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

    - Doberman Pinscher

    - Rottweiler

    - Dalmatian

    - Poodles have really, really appealed to me lately as well (miniatures inparticular)

Some sort of herding breed is always in the back of my mind as well... thought about Border Collies, English Shepherds, and Belgians (Tervuren and Groenendael). I'm unsure whether I could actually live with a herding breed though realistically, as much as I'd love to. I need to spend more time around them. Jack Russell Terriers really have my attention lately as well.

I was thinking about this, today, when I was talking to a Poodle breeder/exhibitor. I think I misspoke. Performance/conformation cross would probably have been a better way to say it. Working dogs, to me, work for a living. My dogs are strictly performance dogs. Whether or not they work has nothing to do with whether or not we eat. Things are a little different for the serious herding, hunting, police, etc working dogs and working lines. They're more serious dogs.  The Minis bred with *performance* in mind do have a different attitude than the conformation only lines, though, and I prefer them.

    After Shih tzu & Llhasa:

    - Briard

    - Rescued Pit

    - Non-shedding Golden (Do they exist?) ;)

    - Cav

    - Non-drooling St. Bernard or English Bulldog

Definitely down the road a rescued senior dog that no one else wants......

Goldens, Cavs, Bulldogs, and Sts all shed quite a bit, compared to a Briard or Shih Tzu, or a Lhasa.

    • Gold Top Dog
It's amazing how little my Llhasa and Shih tzu shed........ my first choice, before I got them was a Golden, but the shedding was a huge issue (too much dander puts my allergies through the roof), I was really disappointed..... but I love, love, love my girls.... :)

     In no particular order:

    -Ibizan Hound

-Silken windhound (I've only just rediscovered these...beyoootiful dogs)

    -Italian Greyhound

    -Rhodesian Ridgeback

    -Whippet

Or...  irish wolfhound, doberman,  basenji, shiba inu

There are too many breeds that I want...

    Only five?!? Confused

     Hmm...

    APBT

    Staffordshire Terrier

    Doberman

    Rottweiler

    Dalmation (?)

Oh there's too many now that I start thinking about it! Maybe we should do top 5 large breeds and top 5 small breeds cuz I do love those min pins.....

But honestly, I think I'll always own a bully breed... just love 'em too much!!! lol

Afraid there are no non-shedding Goldens and Non Drooling Saints or Bulldogs.

Do you worry that you couldn't live with a herder because of the personality quirks? Or are you concerned they'd be too active/off the walls?

    • Puppy

    My top five:

Doberman: I couldn't give you all the reasons if I rambled on for an hour.

Italian Greyhounds: I had an Italian Greyhound for 17 years that was absolutely one of the smartest, best dogs I've ever known.  (When I was a kid, I stupidly thought many small dogs weren't "real dogs" but quickly learned I had been a fool to ever think that.)

    Mixed breeds

Whippets (never had a whippet though)

Beagle (I know they can be noisy, but mine was raised with/by Dobermans and Italian Greyhounds and knows how to track silently and can spend hours outside not making a sound), but I do love the occasional Beagle War Cry, when she finds a hot rabbit trail!

    Labradors

    Great Danes

oops, already over 5, so I'll just say I've never met a dog I didn't really like, just a few who have been poorly raised.

In my current crabby mood, I would say, I"m done after these guys are gone LOL.  (crabby after Echo's 20 minute escapade all over the neighborhood).

Still next dog I'd like to be toy poodle, then it 'feels' like a nice mix currently to have one big dog (ok, echo is 'medium' but still much bigger than I'm used to) and one or two small ones.

Although now dealing with Echo's 'improper coat' which sheds like crazy.... dog hair EVERYWHERE... I my list goes like this:

Toy poodle, Mini poodle, Wavy Portie, ummmmm... lowchen or havanese? Umm... I dunno. I'd also like to some day have a complete mutt, or shelter dog. Perhaps one of the above will surface at the right time later on down the road, but for now, despite my recent yearning for a toy pood, my house is full enough of animals...
