    No other schnauzer lovers? LOL.....

I would love to have a Giant Schnauzer or Bouvier but the grooming worries me.

    1. Mixed breed of any of the following!

    2. Working line ACD; I'd loooove to import a dog from Australia since I've heard that the Australian working line ACDs are a wholly different type of dog.

    3. Working line Malinois

    4. Working line BC

    LOL see a pattern?

    5. Don't really super desire any others, but maybe a Pit if I had the set up to deal with dog-dog aggression easily.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of Rottie lovers either!  LOL

Kim, I think the pics are adorable! And the Lab looked great!

     1. Chinese Crested. There will be more. The sooner, the better.

     2. Miniature Poodle, from a working/conformation cross breeding. Color fault is fine, as I would rather die than keep a Poodle in show coat. Structure must be perfect. No, I'm not picky!

     3. Peruvian Inca Orchid. Yes, please. Red, pink, or black, it matters not to me. I melt.

    4.  Miniature or toy Xoloitzcuintle. I'm not up for a standard.

    5. Bearded Collie. I am a closet adorer of the breed, but it's unlikely I'll ever end up with something quite that high maintenance.

Don't worry, when I get mine there will be plenty of pics to go around. You will get to see all the warm fuzzy bouncy fun without participating in the maintenanceWink  someday...

What's a "working" toy poodle?? I thought they were bred as lap dogs! I know the Standard Poodle was/is a gundog.

I would have a mini schnauzer if it was one of YOUR puppies, Kim :)

After schnauzie, I would say for sure, another Westie.

Aaaand, that's about it. I'm not big into specific breeds.

She wasn't talking about a toy but a mini. Poodles are one breed with three varieties and have just one AKC parent club - The Poodle Club of America. They define the varieties as:

    • The Standard Poodle: over 15 inches at the shoulder - most are in the 22-27" range
    • The Miniature Poodle: over 10 inches and not over 15 inches at the shoulder - most are in the 13-15" range
    • The Toy Poodle: 10 inches and under at the shoulder

One could breed Minis to Standards or Mini to Toy and get a litter that had a size range. Even breeding Mini to Mini, Standard to Standard or Toy to Toy you will sometimes get other varieties in a litter, since the varieties are only defined by size. A dog out of two Standard parents who does not grow to over 15" at the shoulder is a Standard. The tricky thing becomes guessing about the size when they are registered - once they are registered as say a Mini, they are always a Mini on paper even if they get too big or not big enough (would DQ them in the show ring).

There are actually quite a few breeder breeding Standards for hunting ability. In theory one could create Minis with working temperament by breeding them to these standards. Or if these Standards produce Minis, using them to create a work bred line.

Have you been around many Beardies in person? If not, it is a breed I definitely suggest lots of hands on experience with before deciding you want one. They are...different.

    YES!

Part of my goal in life is to own a Beardie. I have been in contact with a few breeders/owners  for a long time now.  I have met the breed on a few ocasions, worked with them, and talked with handlers extensivly about if this is the breed for me. I was also on a waiting list for a puppy that was produced by AI.  The breeder cairfuly screened me and kept me informed every step of the way.  About three years later when the insemination finaly took, I was just not in the right place in my life to bring in anouther dog.  I have every book I can get my hands on about the Beardie.  Some might call me crazy for wanting such a dog but beleve me, I know that IS the dog for me.  I know that once I have my dream dog then I can fianly call my life perfect, until then I have a lot to work towards to get to the level where I can bring a beardie into my home.

They aren't bad dogs and are generally pretty fun and playful. It's just the widespread temperament/soundness issues in them that make me caution people to make sure they are around a lot of them before getting one. I am pretty intrigued by the working Beardies though and would love to meet some of them.

Wanted to add that when I say temperament/soundness issues, I don't all mean any sort of aggression. I don't think I have ever met an aggressive Beardie LOL The issues I'm talking about are more issues of soundness/nerves - widespread sound sensitivity/storm phobia and issues with being overly soft/sensitive in general. For example, dogs so soft that they shut down if they see other dogs corrected by other people. According to the Beardie people I've talked to, just about all of them are sound sensitive and storm phobic to some degree. Those are really the only "issues" I can think of with the breed but they are enough that the breed really needs an understanding owner/trainer. I have talked to quite a few dog people over the years who had gotten one, loved them but said "never again" because they found it frustrating to live with such a sensitive dog. But then again, I know multiple people who wouldn't have anything else and just adore the breed and have had great success in performance with them.
