    1. Shorthaired Potcake.  They're friggen' smart.

Ok, have to ask; what is a "shorthaired potcake"????
Just did a little google search of my own and what came up about "potcakes" is they're basically mutts from the Bahamas, Turks, and Caicos, and the term "potcakes" was given to the mutts by locals...?

    Pomeranian

Some type of Mastif...Neo maybe? Not sure.

Hey, where is our Neo? Is Caline around? I haven't seen her in a while.

I am pretty partial to herding breeds and with the exception of one Dobe mix, my own dogs have always been herding breeds. I did raise a Greyhound pup for someone once and would have kept her in a heartbeat if the situation would have allowed for it. So my list (not including the breeds I own):

     1. Another variety of Belgian. I'd love to have a Laeken (they're so scruffy!) someday but like Tervs and Mals too.

     2. Sighthound. I can never quite decide which one though. My favorites are probably Whippets, Greys, Salukis and Silken Windhounds.  I like the size of Whippets and they are probably the most versatile sighthound, so likely I'd go with that breed.

     3. Pyr Shepherd. Neat, oddball little herding dogs. I really like the good ones but temperaments can be iffy with the breed. Would have to get a young puppy and have been able to interact with the parents/relatives.

     4.  Border Collie (working bred). I have always wanted a BC and have had multiple "temporary BCs" in my life. I have liked the breed since before agility was even a well known sport. I love their drive, work ethic and general temperament. Had things gone differently, I easily could have had a pack of BCs instead of Belgians.

      5. Daschshund. Will probably be my hubby's next dog and it's a breed we both like.

There are LOTS of other breeds I really like though. And I like some of the work/performance bred mixes too like Borderjacks, Border Whippets, Lurchers, ect.

True, when I was in the Bahamas I was told they are called "potcakes" because that is what they eat.  When the cooks in restaurants where done at the end of the day they would toss out the food that was caked onto the bottom of the pot, aka Potcake.  The stray dogs would eat it the potcake giving them the name Potcake Dogs.  Most were tan or brown in color and just looked like a mix of everything that ever walked on the island.

No one really owned the potcakes on the island I was on, but the community took it upon themselves to spay and neuter each one that was caught and then let them go back onto the streets.

I enjoyed reading these. I fantasize about other dogs and breeds too. Sometimes I even do a fair amount of research.  I don't know if I could be poodleless. I learned from my son dogs that often dogs reflect their trainer more than their breeds (his were always mixed and always more like "his" dogs than like any of their breeds) so I still don't know how much is breed. Here's my list which changes all the time.

    1. Standard poodle
    2. Grayhound
    3. Papillon
    4. GSD (working lines)
    5. Doberman.

I think if I could ever be normal (I've read about normal people, Ken tells me that normal people have only 1 or 2 dogs) I would have a lap dog and a big dog. Of course I am not in any hurry for that to happen because I have 6 wonderful dogs now and don't want any of them to leave me.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Newfies, Labs, and Chows as well but I would like to try owning the 5 I have on my list.

My dream would be a Newfoundland or Doberman Pinscher, but how many times do purebreds pop up in the humane society? Not often.

Psssstttt...Cher came from an Animal Control facility on the outskirts of town.  Her adoption fee was $12, & I had to sign a spay contract, which was something that I was planning on doing with or without a contract in place.  I wasn't looking for a dobe at the time, but Cher fell into my lap & I couldn't say no.  She was the best $12 that I've ever spent.

I think that the key to finding a specific breed at the local humane society is to keep in touch with the people there.  Let them know what you are looking for, so that if they have that breed come in, they can contact you.  I don't know about your area, but here, our animal control & humane society contacts breed specific rescue groups about their purebred dogs.  I am one of the secondary contacts for dobe rescue.  I usually field a call a week about a dobe who has been or is going to be turned over to AC or the HS.  If we have fosters available (and sometimes even when we don't) we pull the dog from the shelter, or if it hasn't made it there yet, we take the dog instead of sending it through AC first.  Dobes are not kennel dogs.  Our goal is to keep them out of the shelter/kennel situation & into a dobe savy foster home.

    Now back on topic.....

I would love to have a Vizsla, but I am fairly certain that they are too soft tempered to live, happily, with us.

DH insists that I post his list as well.

    1. Chessie
    2. Toller
    3. Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
    4. Flat Coat Retriever
    5. mumble, mumble, mumble, a doberman if it's like Cher, not Bevo  (read, we raise it together, and both bond with it, instead of him coming in after the dog is bonded with me.)

Cher is sure lucky to have found you!

Really the availability of a dog in rescue/shelters depends on a few things. Cher was a puppy but was in very poor health. It is much harder to find purebred puppies in shelters (and with some breeds next to no chance of doing so), especially healthy, young purebred puppies. It is possible though with the more popular breeds. A Dobe rescue here had a pregnant female come in who gave birth to a litter of purebred Dobes - in all colors even! If you are willing to consider adopting older puppies or adults and aren't in a super hurry, you have a decent chance of finding either a Dobe or Newf in rescue/shelter or needing rehomed through local classifieds. And there are always plenty of them in breed rescue to choose from.
