The vet check is intended to check that -
A - you actually bring your dog to a vet on a regular basis (you'd be surprised how many folks say "well, I didn't bother after the puppy shots... or he became a senior dog.... or whatever".) A couple weeks doesn't mean much - the vet may point it out and folks understand a small lapse. You can explain that away if they ask because you're going to a different vet. If it's a specialist, brownie points for you. Shows even more commitment ($$) to your dog.
B - If your vet has had good interactions with you and feels you are competant to own pets. Even though people want more dogs, sometimes they shouldn't have them. I think of that little dachs in another thread where the great aunt gave it up after 2 weeks because she didn't have the patience for it, but went and got another dog right away. Had her vet been contacted in that scenario, he might have suggested she might not commit to a new dog, either.
The vet should be an objective person familiar with you and your care of animals. Therefore a good source to ask when considering giving another dog to you. I bet you'll get a glowing review!! Or, the tech answering the phone will just say "yeah, he's up to date on shots." and not even bother with more detail.
