"If we can't have the dogs chained to the tree, what's the point of having them?"

What I was trying to say is that many people feel no dog should ever be left outside 24/7. But if that were a necessity, a kennel seems like the safer option.

I wouldn't keep my dog in a kennel 24/7 either, so I can't comment on that.
If she is in the house she
-is in a climate controled enviroment, she is short haired and dislikes heat
    -is not barking mindlessly
-is not attempting to chew through her tie-out
-is not chasing things to the end of the tie-out and being choked
-is not being teased by neighborhood brats
-is not being harassed by/ getting in fights with other dogs
-is not being stolen for fighting purposes
-is not being stolen for fighting purposes
-is not being stolen for fighting purposes

If I am home she is being exercised, hanging out with her people, chewing her chewies, playing with her people, or sleeping.  If I'm not home she is eating her treat ball ing her crate and then sleeping.

And with a responsible owner, the kennel argument becomes invalid - since the dog would be out for frequent walks, socialization and playtime.

The same could be said for a chainexd dog, could it not?

I respect your opinion, Sooner, but, in my experience, there is more damage done with dogs being left in a hot, unshaded kennel, with no food, or water, and absolutly no possible way to even attempt to get food or water or shade.

ROAMING NEIGHBORHOOD DOGS AND CATS....did i leave that out?  If they are neighborhood animals, that means I know them....I did not say "stray dogs and cats" or "wild animals".  And, yes, I like for him to play with these animals...why??????  Because these "responsible" owners that dont tie their dogs, also dont keep an eye on them, and they all stand a very high risk of being hit by a car, or causing other problems.  At least if they are in my yard, playing with my dog, I know they will be safe, and are happy.

I don't think that letting an animal run loose if good either.  It's actually pretty stupid.

What happens if a not-so-nice dog looking for a fight wanders into your yard?  Your dog is at a disagvantage because he cannot run.  Does your dog have a black belt?  I hope so, because it's unlikely that you will be able to pull an angry and determined 125 lb dog off your dog, or worse yet several angry dogs.

But locking a dog in a barn or in a kennel is okay?

Note that I don't advocate that, except as an alternative to chaining the dog to a tree.  My dogs live in my house.

A safe barn can be a lovely place to be - sweet smelling hay, horse breath, stable blankets to lie on, and plenty of shade...  And, a kennel at least keeps stray animals and wildlife out.
How would you keep a chained dog safe from taunting children (a high percentage of dog bites happen from this), loose dogs, coyotes, entanglement, or theft?

I have seen many, many, many chained dogs do this.  Probobly not because they are dumb, but because they are dogs.

The original post said that the article said that the new law makes it illegal to leave pets chained up outside for a prolonged period of time.  "Prolonged period of time" is a very subjective term.  I wonder who determines what is inappropriate. When I walk Ruby around our little town I notice quite a few dogs tied out, two of which are EXTREMELY aggressive.  They both show signs of being left out for long periods of time because they have really well worn paths around the very small area they can walk around in (reminds me of the zoo).  One of them will run around his tree so fast that he snaps the line and yanks himself about a foot off the ground.  I've literally seen this dog do this over and over again while we're walking by.  It's pitiful.  But there's no law against it here and the dogs are fed so AC won't do anything about it.

May I ask where you live? I am in piedmont NC, where it is not uncommon for foxs and wolves to get into kennels and fenced areas to kill dogs, chickens, goats, lambs, calves etc... it happens alot more than people realize, espcially in the country where I am. So that doesn't mean alot to me... sorry. To me, a dog has more of a chance fending off a wolf if it has 40-50 feet of chain than it does in a 10x10 kennel.
As for the kennel vs chain concerning taunting childern, the kids can get right up to the fence and taunt just like they can a dog on a chain. The difference being they seem to be more aware of how close they can get with a dog on a chain. Lots of kids don't realize a dog can still bite if they're close enough to the fence. My sister's daughter got bit through a fence.

this is so ridiculous.  to begin with, my dog has NEVER attempted to chew threw his tie out, he doesnt bark at stupid things and like mehpenn said...a smart dog will only run once!  As for stray dogs running into my yard,  that is the ONLY argument you have about the chain or tie out that I would even consider valid.  No one has any control over nature....and thats exactly what stray animals are....nature.  However, my dog happens to be very smart, and does a great job of letting me know when something strange wonders through my yard.  And, I must say....when something strange wonders through my yard, he does a good job letting them know he is boss.  Smart dogs also do that....its called Survival of the Fittest....and no matter what the situation, the dominant figure reigns.

That's good! I'll have to remember that! I had a dog that would do that.. espcially when my EVIL sister would pick up his chain like she was going to take him for a walk and then they'd reach the end of his chain and she'd keep walking but he'd get jerked. He never did learn, poor thing, lol.
