When Can I Open My Mouth?

If anything, I would tell him about the effect this could have on the joints and recommend that he let the puppy run on grass or dirt as that will be easier on the puppy.

Well the pup didn't look too tired.  He looked determined to keep up.  But I don't know I just got a bad feeling when I saw him.  Plus he was riding right beside the boulavard so it would have been easy to let the pup run on the grass.  Maybe I'm paranoid because I have looked into training dogs for endurance so much.  My dogs are going to be sled dogs so its something I'm interested in.  It wasnt overly hot out either.  And I guess if someone came up to me telling me to take it easy on my overly rambuctious husky pups, I might tell them to shove it.  However huskies are not prone to hip displaysia.  And I'm not sure if labs are or if there is just an abundance of labs around here with it, but it seems that every 3rd lab I meet lately has HD.  WhiteFox, I am definately not an expert on dogs, but thanks anyway.[:D]

I personally wouldn't say anything.  Considering the fact that I've seen maybe 3 fit labs and roughly 546874654356876 obese ones in the last year or so at least this guys getting his dog out and working.  I would guess that years of obesity would be harder on the hips than some biking at 6 months.

Coming from me (one who had taken the opposite side of this discussion) I have to say that is a very good point! I guess we have to pick our battles. Its like the kids sitting inside playing video games instead of outside playing.......their are benefits to both

I'm trying to picture how you would even tell him!  I have this image in my head of you racing behind a bicycle, shouting at the guy to slow down so that you can talk to him.  [:D]

Honestly, I would mind my own business in this situation.  I don't give people a hard time when I see their fat dogs (and I see fat dogs every day!), so I don't see any reason to give someone a hard time for running their dog.  I'll bet that an over-exercised dog is happier and healthier than an under-exercised dog.

If it was a close friend (or even an acquaintance that I saw regularly), I might bring it up along the lines of "you know, when I planned on running with my dog, my vet told me that it was bad for growing puppies", or something along those lines.

That said, my vet DID tell me that jumping up and down from a truck is bad for pups.  My dog jumps down from our van every day.  He also has to go up and down stairs several times a day to get into our apartment.  I know that some of these things may be bad for him, but sometimes circumstances prevent the ideal situation.

    Cheers,

Thats a great idea if you really want to say something.  You could go up to him and find a way to ask him about it like you want his advice, and that would give you an opportunity to say youve heard its bad for them (although I dont know if it really is) but you could do something like that.  You could say something like "hi, I noticed you run your dog bla bla, how do you get him to run next to you so good (not run off or pull).." Play dumb ya know, then say that youve heard it can be bad for hips and has he heard that..?  If he says no then be like yeah the vet said too much and so on...  I dunno lol, just a thought if you decide the urge is too strong[:)]

Well I haven't seen this guy again anyway.  And I probably wouldn't say anything to this guy.  Unfortunately even if this guy were to listen to me, the alternative would probably be an underexercised dog.
