Tattooing a dog?

    Tattooing a dog?

I'm probobly being paranoid, but I'd like to have Sally tattooed for ID's sake in case she was ever lost or stolen (there have been pit thefts in our area--people fight them).  She is already microchipped and wears her tags 24/7, but I'd like an additional outward ID in case whoever picked her up didn't have a scanner, or the scanner didn't work with our chip.

What are the pros and cons of this?  Is it painful?  Who does it and what does a tattoo consist of?  Is she too old at this point (she's 2 yrs)?

We tatoo our dogs ourselves...some vets will do it, but it is really quite simple.

As far as pain is concerned, it's just a pinch.  You'll get a little yelp, but not any thing more than having a microchip injected.

Just make sure you register the tatoo.

Is there some sort of website listing the vets that will do it?  It took me a year to be able to give horse shots without my hands shaking, I don't think that I could do it without practicing first and I KNOW DH wouldn't be able to handle it.....

Do you mean a tatoo or freeze branding?

The only list I have seen is for the UK.  I am not aware of one for  the US.

    I would ask your Vet.

We ink tattoo the inner thigh so a potential thief won't be inclined to cut one of our dogs ears off.

Who would look on the inner thigh of the back leg for a tatoo?  I would think that that could be potential dangerous with an unknown dog.  I think they should have freeze branding here...they do it on horses, why not on a dog?  Are there better way to keep your pet ID'd?

You probably can call vets around you local area, animals shelters, kennel clubs.

The animal control where I live will tattoo your dog for free. I prefer not to do that with Sofia, too traumatic.

If you do get your dog tattooed, be sure it's big enough to be readable 10 years down the road. A blurry, unreadable tattoo is useless as an identifier. I've seen them that way, too, as has the animal control here.

Do they generally sedate them?  She doesn't cry or struggle when getting her shots....

    Yes, it requires anesthesia.

Who would look on the inner thigh of the back leg for a tattoo?

Vets, trainers, breeders, tech, groomers, shelter employee's...

    It is pretty common practice.

The newer ink stamps are permanent and don't smear over time.  the process is no more painful or traumatic than giving your dog a shot.

Ink tattooing does NOT require anesthesia.

    Yes, it requires anesthesia.

All the way out, or just sedated?

Well, I live in the Last Frontier, what can I say? We probably don't have the most modern method. I'll call and ask EXACTLY what they do. They offered to do it for me the other day when we were scanning Sofie for a chip (never found one) and I asked if it required anesthesia and they said yes. So I'll post again when I find out.

It sounds like there are several different processes that go by the name "tattooing."
