Gracie came to us at 5 months old with the name Marilyn. It didn't take her long to learn her new name, especially when it is used a lot while associated with treats and loving!

Shakespeare was Shakespeare when we picked him out from the Humane Society.  He had a brother named Dickens who was adopted out just a minute before we got our dog.  He gets nicknamed Shaker alot, and I told him when we first got him that hed be called d@mn dog once in awhile too.

Jessie's name was Cocoa when we adopted her. I read in a book by Brian Kilcommons that changing a dog's name when you adopt it is a good idea, especially if they were abused because they associate their former name with their past; don't know how true that is but we didn't like the name Cocoa and she had been underfed and abused (hit).

When we got our Molly at the shelter years ago, her name there was Lucky but when we got home we immediately changed it to Molly cuz she looked like a Molly, she took to it within a day, unfortunately our neighbor had a dog called lucky and if she heard him call for him she would respond as well. Took her a while to stop responding to Lucky.

My dog was rescued from the pound and the lady who got him off deathrow was calling him 'Michael' after the angel.  I really think she is the angel, not the dog - who is sweet and silly and loveable.  Now we call him 'Mack' (the yellow bus).   Jules

Ace was a shelter dog and he came with a name that I hated (Axel).  I was worried that changing it would be traumatic for him, but he didn't seem to care.  He had to get used to a whole new life and set of expectations anyway.

My dog was named Bobbos... I changed it to Panda. He reminds me of a panda for some reason. >_>

I've adopted strays and named them, so that's the same thing I guess.  They did just fine.  I think whatever you say to them that results in their getting fed or petted is okay with them.  I called one little dog Brownie because no matter what else I tried (Buffy, for example) she happily responded to 'Brownie.'

yep! I took in a 3 year old Sheltie named Merlin.  He just didn't seem like a Merlin to me and I started calling him Teddy Bear from day one! He totally responded to that till the day he went to doggy heaven 11 years later.
