    Help regarding heartworm prevention...please! (Proofpup)

Hello all!! I have have been using hartguard for quite a few years now but would like to know everyones opinion on the mediaction and im also leaning towards using something new. If you could please tell me medications you prefer and why. If it helps I have a 16 yr old papillion mix she weighs 11.5 lbs, 5 yr old minpin he weighs 15 lbs and a 3 yr old patterdale terrier who weighs 18 lbs...I run them for a few miles almost everyday, we usually go to state land, parks or use my grandmothers farm. In the summer we take them kayaking with us so they are constantly outside and usually by bodies of water. I hope i gave you enough info to help me out. Smile thanks in advance!!!  Erica

forgot to add my SO has a patterdale as well she is 17lbs and nearly 3 yrs.

I use Interceptor for all my dogs and have for many years.  I give it year round because we live in a climate with the potential for mosquitos year round.

My preference is Interceptor.  It has been tested to be easier on the collie breeds and also treats for a few other parasites that are found in my area.  It's a pill, not a chewable like Heatguard so it's a little more difficult to give.  I know there's some debate over if it's even alright to give this type of poison to a dog but I lost my childhood dog to heartworm.  So, I see not giving my dog a preventative to be more dangerous then giving the monthly pill.  It really comes down to a personal preference and what you think is best for your dog.

I also give Interceptor.  One of my dogs is a herder mix, so I wouldn't risk giving him Heartgard (ivermectin).  Plus, like the others said, it also prevents whipworms, which Heartgard doesn't.

Also, both of my boys eat their pill every month without hesitation.  They think it's a treat, lol.

I use Interceptor, because it kills whipworms.

I also use Interceptor -- Milbemycin is more effective not only just with heartworm but also with hooks and whips (which are rampant in the south).

No, I don't like to have to give it but heartworm is SO prevalent in the south (and year round as well) that the risk is just plain too enormous to consider.  And I know I have hooks/whips IN my yard and you never get rid of them once infested.

I use interceptor because of the reasons already listed

Another with Interceptor. It was recommended by my vet because of the prevalence of Whip/Hook worms in the South.

Interceptor here too-for the reasons already mentioned.  But, Willow did like taking the Heartgard much better.

    Another vote for Interceptor :)

Thanks for the feedback by the way and I think interceptor would be best for my crew bc they go so many different places and I also hunt with my terriers. I consider my pinscher a terrier bc he has the drive for hunting even tho AKC made them a toy lolWink
