Dumb Things Strangers Do to Dogs

    • Gold Top Dog

I was at a dog show and overheard a little boy and his mother.  The little boy (probably around 6 or so) was admiring a dog.  His mom said, "go on and pet it."  He said, "Shouldn't I ask first?"  The mom replied, "Oh no, if he wasn't nice, they wouldn't let him be at the dog show!"

I had Luna & Apollo at my husband's softball game.  A little boy (probably around 8) came up and got in Apollo's face and YELLED.  I quickly got in between him and Apollo and told him not to do it.  He ran off but then came back later and tried to do it AGAIN!  I was NOT so nice this time and again told him to knock it off.  He said, "Oh, we breed Chihuahua's and I do this to them all the time.  They're mean, though.  They bite!"  Gosh, I wonder why?  I finally ended up leaving because the brat wouldn't leave my dogs alone.

This other time, we were in Petco and a couple of boys came up and asked if they could pet Apollo.  I told them yes and Apollo was eating up the attention from them (they were really nice kids) when their mom came around the corner and SCREAMED when she saw her pweshious baby-wabies petting the big mean dawgie-woggie. *rolls eyes*

I've run into a few less than dog-saavy folk. I had one guy who wanted to breed her to his GSD mix, because they'd made beautiful dogs and we'd get rich. Ari was maaaybe 4-5 months at the time.

I had one person come up to tell me they were going to report me for starving my dog. Ari's physique is naturally slender, and this was during her heaviest growth time. She looked skinny and awkward, but was in no way starved. Oh yeah, lady had a dog in her yard, with more than a few extra pounds on him....She didn't want to "hear" my excuses of what a proper weight is, exercise/energy level, quality food....etc. So, I told her to go ahead and report me, and I pointed out where I worked so whomever she reported me to could find me.

After asking if Ari was a mix (I never think people are dumb not knowing what she is), and me telling him about her breed. He says there's no such thing and the breeder ripped me off just to make a profit. Riiiight.

The mini thing drives me crazy also.  My friend's dog is a mix breed, we guess GSD/cattle dog and who knows what else.  He sota has GSD trates but is size of a small cattle dog.  I was dog-sitting him for a few months last summer and almost everytime I took him out for a walk with Gizmo I always got asked if he was a mini GSD and then followed by the question if I would want to breed him.  He was also only 7 mo. old at that time.Sad

Here are a few pics of the Mini GSD:

(yeah, Gizmo loves the camera so she had to jump right in front when I was taking the pic)

Another one that happened recently. So my mom had Simba at the vet for a 'happy visit' basically they just play with him. So she's out in the waiting room with Simba and she sees another dog.

Mom: Is it okay if they see each other?

Guy: As long as he doesn't bite me or my dog, sure.

Seriously I commend anyone who has a dog that is considered dangerous, and doesn't rip out people's throats for making such nasty prejudices.  Clearly Simba is a dangerous dog, what with his butt wiggling and whimpering wanting to see the dog.

You gotta think maybe the guy was just being cautious...? He doesn't know your dog or anything about him. And a wiggly butt doesn't always equal a friendly dog. But kudos to your Mom for taking Simba for a "happy visit"! Yes

I know. :-/ I'm just sensitive about that stuff, especially since now I have a dog that does look like an APBT a lot of people are cautious around him. Not something I'm used to yet. Yep! He loves it, she also plans on taking him again to spend the day for boarding there. Which I sort of hate because I miss my little brat. :-/

Oh, I'm sensative about stuff like that, too. I have a BIG 105lb BLACK dog, lol, and he drools more than most matiffs do (which doesn't help his case) and most people are very cautious around him. I appreciate it though because I don't like people crowding my dog or- more importantly- me.

I was rather surprised when I found out how many people fear black dogs. Haha! Simba gets foamy sometimes when he drools, probably makes him look vicious.  He got drool on a kid's shirt one time, kind of embarrassing. Yeah I suppose I like it when people don't crowd around me, but it is sweet when people come up to pet him. A girl that works at petco fell in love with him and kept giving him treats hehe.

It's their loss for not wanting to get to know great dogs like yours and mine.

These both happened on Saturday when I went to Port Jefferson with Simba(I put up pics if anyone wants to see them :)).

We're sitting down just relaxing watching the boats pass, Simba was people watching and this guy walks by and decides to just reach over Simba's head to pet him as he walks by....The heck?! Not all dogs like that, Simba doesn't care for being pet over the head and thank god he didn't react. :|

This family was walking by, pushing their baby in the stroller and the mom was saying hi to Simba. So my sister said she was welcomed to come and pet him, heck half the reason we took him was for socialization, the other half was to just have fun with him. :P So she goes "Oh! He's friendly?!" No, obviously he's very aggressive and the reason we have him out here where a bunch of people are was so he could choose his next meal. She made up for it when she kept complimenting on how good of a dog he was though. Hehe.

I'm just jumping to the end of this thread.  I know I've posted before but a new one happened to me & the dogs.  Okay, not totally new but confounding to me.  I was bedding a dog for the night & she was going with us part way to Iowa.  She was an owner surrender to another rescue group (not Papillon Haven. We're so overwhelmed we're asking other rescue groups if they can help)  Anyway, this poor girl was so scared she lead with her teeth.  She got me 3 times before I could even react.  I don't blame her one bit.  Anyway, my question is, why do people approach the one dog that it's really a crappy idea to approach?  Here I am, at a rest stop.  I'm walking BOTH Aspen & Tika.  They look almost identical.  Almost every time we stopped someone would walk up to Tika, with their hand out & want to pet her.  Sure, go ahead.  She's not big but she does bite.  Here's Aspen still politely waiting for a pet & they want to pet the Tazmanian Devil.

The good news is she settled down considerably by the scond day I had her.  She sat in my lap & was a love.

I got a good laugh outta these!

My favorites so far in order of dogs:

Maze: "But she's a lab and all labs are friendly" Well mine didn't get the memo!

"She soo skinny. You should feed her more. Fatten her up" She's 50lbs.. Sooo not starved.

At the park, Maze is on a long line and another dogs comes up and takes her ball.."Mines friendly and loves to play ball" Mine's not and doesn't share her toys!

Sandy: "Watch out for that one! She'll bite ya in your sleep" Pssht.. Right...

"Those Jacks are so hyper and dumb!" No... Jacks that aren't properly exercised are hyper and seem dumb..

"She'll never be a therapy dog. Jacks nip a lot" Well her certificate says other wise...

"She can't be a pure Jack. She's too mellow" -______- Oi.....
