Whole Body Is Sore

    Whole Body Is Sore

Bailey got her shots yesterday (a puppy combo not really sure what involved... I know I should know better but I just do what vet says) and now we cant even pick her up without her yelping.  If you pet her too far down on her back she yelps even if its a VERY gentle pet... BUT what really bothers me is that I cant even pick her up anymore she cries the entire time.  She got the shot on her back... so I dont see why her chest area and all would be SO sore!  Im so worried, I know I am worry wart, but I need to know if this is normal.  Anyone know?  BTW - other than that shes acting completely normal.  Attitude poops eating everything find EXCEPT you cant touch her.

Not sure if it is normal. But  just a idea is it her first set of shots? Maybe she is just trying to get your attention... Kinda like oh poor me type of thing? (Im not going to be too much of a help lol)  But thought maybe that could be a idea... I know my dogs  cry when they want my attention.. Or too make things seem  more worse then they really are...

I'm sorry Loveukaykay, I could only find that pain is a possible side effect, but what I read did not specify what kind of pain.

I would say if it persists, you should call your vet.
    • Gold Top Dog
Nope ... not normal.  Can you get to a health store and get some homeopathic Thuja tomorrow?  3-4 pellets (if you want to email me I'll send you my phone number and talk you thru it if you want) probably twice to three times tomorrow and for 2-3 days after.  But that might help detox her safely (it won't affect the efficacy of the vaccines either).  If her back aches where she got the shot it could make her sore all over.

What all did they give her?  probably the combo shot and maybe rabies too??  Rabies can make them sore at the injection site but that's a LOT of vaccines at once (the combo shot alone puts a strain on the body).

Call the vet first thing Monday -- she may stay sore and the vet NEEDS to be aware of this side effect in any event.  In honesty, next time I would give ONE parvo and ONE distemper NOT on the same weeks (allow a couple of months between) and not use the combo shot at all.  .

Was she really "bouncing off walls" just after the shot??  Just wondering how much of an allergic reaciton this is.

Make her a cup of chammomile tea -- and put just a couple of grains of boullion in it (like a tiny corner of a boullion cube -- NOT much) or put a little bit of sweet in it - it will help with the soreness and not upset her stomach.

If you really feel it's totally debilitating, find an e-vet, but that's your call.  Good luck.

Aww, poor Bailey!! I hope she feels better in the morning!
    • Gold Top Dog
callie I hope you know how much I appreciate your reply!  I needed something!  I will call the vet Monday, I actually have her cell b/c of Kayla... she loved my Kayla.. she actually cried.  anyway

I have a ton of people over right now so all I can do at the moment is make that recipie (sp)  sorry been drinking.  No she wasnt bouncing off the walls, everything normal but I cant touch her really unless I stay by her head and be VERY gentle... some of the people here are loving on her I have to keep telling them NO!  cause she stared to shy away from touching. They are no rough dont worry just plain ole petting. She is VERY sensitive tho to everything... but I dont mind shes my baby!  I gave her a raw bone and shes one the rug, and Ill go give her the "soup".  Can you tell me exactly what it will do?  Just ease pain?  I will do it anyway b4 you answer b/c I do trust your advice and want to help her.  I will also go get that stuff tomorrow.  Should I take her temp???

Thank you guys!  Im gonna ramble for a sec cause alcohol brings things out of people, lol.  But, just wanna say how glad I am to have found this place, and you guys, and truly feel like I have "friends" here.  I dont wanna sound like a weirdo... but I really appreciate you guys and your friendship and your help![:)][:)]

thanks Jennie!  Ok as much as I wanna sit here I gotta go back to everyone.  They are sleeping over, yikes!
    • Gold Top Dog
LOL, Amy:) The chamomile is actually a very mild NSAID. It will reduce the pain and inflamation, and help her to relax a little.
    • Gold Top Dog
Yup shes sleeping.... I dont think I will get any sleep tonight!!!  Its 4:45 and everyone is still in the pool!![&:]

What is NSAID?  I like that you can help them with natural things like that!!  What does the Thuja amd what does that do?

Jennie I see theres another crazy night owl![8D]

Because Im done swimming and bored Ill go take a pic of Bailey right now so you can see but I dont think it matters lol just wanna do it, heh.

BTW - everyone thinks I absolutely crazy for making that stuff for her, some people just dont get the relationship we have.  Also, I know they truly are just trying to make me feel better, but when talking about Kayla I can also tell they have NO IDEA what she was to me.
    • Gold Top Dog
This probably is pointless but anyway I wanna show you her lol.  I guess you can see that she LOOKS normal..?

    These two are just now...

This was earlier just for an awake pic

This is just so yall can see how shes growing!!  Any more ideas yet what she could be???[:)]  Long long legs, lean body, kind of a pitty face and pointy huge ears lol.[sm=kiss.gif]

Sorry -- by 1:00 a.m. I was done for *grin*.

NSAID = non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (like aspirin,  and carprophen, a/k/a Rimadyl, which are two that can be given to dogs).  Except chammomile won't upset the stomach -- it's often given to *reduce* stomach inflammation in fact.

Just because we're discussing it -- I want to make the point here for anyone 'lurking' -- DO NOT ever give dogs acetaminaphen (Tylenol) or ibuprophen (Motrin/Nuprin) -- both are poison to dogs.  Once in a while I've seen a vet give ibuprophen, but it has to be dosed incredibly carefully and it's *bad* for the liver.  But Tylenol, **in particular**, is total poison -- just one reg. strength Tylenol can cause immediate renal failure and kill a small dog or pup.

But in this case, the chammomile will just soothe the system a little bit.

Before you do the Thuja --  I'll have to 'teach' you how to get into those stupid little containers (it's a French company -- it comes in a little dispenser made to put in your mouth so you don't 'touch' the pellets and it's just plain not intuitive to Americans *grin*).

There's a little clear plastic top on the top of Boiron's little blue tubes (it's probably the easiest brand to find unless you find someplace that sells a TON of homeopathics, and I think Hylands does make thuja, but Boiron is the one you'll find fastest probably).

Take that little top off, and get a pair of small pliers (yeah, I'm serious).  Turn the tube upside down over a piece of paper.  Grab the little 'collar' at the top of the bottle and hold it with the pliers, and twist the tube.  You have to twist it all the way around and one tiny pellet will fall out.

Typically I will fold a piece of paper in quarters and unfold (so the pellets run to the center *grin* bouncy little things!)

After you get 3-4 of them, fold the paper with the pellets inside and crush them with a spoon or something.  They look like little candies.

The first time you will probably have to pour it in Bailey's mouth -- but make a big deal out of it like THIS medicine is YUM.

It is -- it's sweet.  Mine will come running for homeopathics.  All I have to do is put the pellets on the floor and they'll chew them up.

It's good to give thuja for a couple of days (2-3 times a day) after vaccines.

    'Giving' it is simple.
    • Gold Top Dog
That is not an uncommon reaction for the lepto vaccine.  If that was in the combo, I'd ask the vet not to give it again.  Most vets don't carry the single vaccines and old carry combos - if that is the case, give the least in a trip as possible.  I give mine DHPP (Distemper Hepatitis Parainfluenza Parvo) but never give corona or lepto.  I also don't let them give any other vaccines on the same trip.   Hopefully Callie's remedies will help for now!
    • Gold Top Dog
Okay I got my reciept (and some sleep thank goodness)...  so I can list what it was.  She is still sore but its a tiny bit better I think...
I have tried to read a little bit about ya'lls previous posts about shots and figure it all out but just do what the vet says for fear of getting something wrong.  Anyway the vet said she will need another round of this in 3 weeks, hmm. This is what reciept says

    Distem/Adeno/Para/Lepto Vac #3
    Parvo #3
    Corona Vaccination
    Bordetella Vaccination #1
    Fecal Float
    Fecal Smear
Metoclopramide 5mg  ( that ones cause I told her that shes very carsick )

Thanks for your email Callie, and the help!  Ive never had a shot problem before but sounds like its all too common[8|]

ETA - this was one shot and some drips in the nose.
    • Gold Top Dog
Next time do single vaccines -- JUST distemper and JUST parvo.  You don't ever *need* to vaccinate for corona.  Corona virus lives *in* parvovirus.  A dog can't get corona unless it already HAS (currently, as in right now) parvo -because the corona virus can't live 'alone'.  So if the dog is adequately protected against parvo you never ever need to vaccinate for corona.  It's a tiny puppy disease anyway.

If lepto isn't currently a problem don't vaccinate for it (that's generally true for anyone to be honest) ... but in Bailey's case I wouldn't ever give her a lepto vaccine again.

Metylclopramide is Reglan -- that's kinda like hitting nausea over the head with a hammer -- keep the Reglan for at time when she's really sick but just take her more and more and MORE in the car and get her used to going and she won't get so carsick.

And don't feed her before you put her in the car (that's from the Callie "DUH" files -- I've had several dogs who got carsick and I learned duhhhh! NOT to feed them before they went somewhere!!).  But it's typically just something they have to get used to -- they get nervous and excited and it makes them urp.  The more you take her the easier it will get for her.

Honestly?  I won't get more than one vaccine at a time ever.  Yes, it means separate visits ... but it's easier on the dog.

Give the thuja for three days or so ... that should help.  You can also give her the chammomile tea 3-4 times a day (she doesn't have to drink the whole thing at a time -- put it in the fridge -- or you can put it in a baby dropper and just squirt it in her mouth.

From the looks of it, you should only need a Bordetella #2 in 3 wks.  That was the nose drops.  Your dog has had three DHLPPC, which is plenty!!  Also, don't let them give the Rabies on the same visit as the Bordetella booster - try to space it our by atleast 3 weeks.
