you folks should try reading Karen Delise's book on Fatal Dog Attacks. Make sure you have some tissues handy. Many of the attacking dogs were severely abused and/or neglected. Other incidents were caused by people being incredibly stupid, or having the most amazingly unrealistic expectations of dogs.

Most non-fatal dog bites are inflicted on young boys by the family dog and are caused by the parents failure to protect the dog from the boy or teach the boy how to safely behave around the dog. Many other dog bites are caused by people doing one of the big NO-NOs: trying to hug a dog, approaching a strange dog from the front and leaning over the dog and patting it on top of the head, trying to forcibly pry something out of the dog's mouth, grabbing suddenly at the dog's collar, or trying to forcibly remove a dog from a piece of furniture. All caused by a basic failure on the part of humans to understand natural dog behavior, and by humans choosing to use force and violence towards dogs.
