What is the most expressive part of your dog?

I had to think about this for a while. Gobie: his barks, he has many different barks, each meaning different things. Lexi, her eyes. She has the eeyore expression down perfectly. Darby: her mouth. She can form it into this little o shape and then she just barely mutters a grruuff. too cute!

I'm still getting to know Simba, but I'd say his eyes.

It's hard to pick just one thing with mine!

Timmy - His mouth probably. He is very vocal, which sometimes scares people, they mistake his talking for growling for quite awhile until they get to know him. He has a lot of different sounds - his actual growl, which I've never heard but FH has heard once, he has his contented "purring" noise when he's getting a belly rub, he has this murmur for when he is playing, he has another one if you are bugging him, etc. The list could go on and on. His eyes are also very expressive, in a completely different way from Sadie's - those of you who have owned a Rottweiler will know what I'm talking about with the look of complete devotion. He always looks like "there is something going on upstairs" hehehe. I love Sadie - but I can't say the same for her! LOL

Sadie - Her ears are probably the most expressive part. She has all these different positions for them, excited, tired, content, mischievous, etc. Her posture is a close second though, she does all these weird things/movements. She is overall, incredibly expressive. FH and I always joke that she might as well talk, there is no secret to what she is thinking.

    Cleo: Eyebrows/eyes

    Ellie: Tail

    RC: Mouf

Well since Zeke's ears stand naturally- it is a good indication that he is not happy when his ears are down. Whenever he is happy, alert, playful those ears are up. However, Zeke is not usually in a "bad" mood but, when he is bored (only negative mood he generally has) his ears will go back.

Gracie - ears go all over the place and regulate what is going on with her.  My vet even commented once that she's very expressive and communicative with her ears.

Henry - all about the eyes.  Intense or pleading or challenging - totally read what's going on with him.

Patrick - his entire head - the position, tilt tells you what is up with him

I would say Joey's ears are key.  He's got fantastic facial expressions (to rival Cleo and I'm so not kidding) but his ears are definitely the barometer I can most count on.

Relaxed ears that sorta sink to the side of his head - chill

    Perky ears - happy

Satelite ears (moving all different directions) - mischeveous

Ears flat against his head - uncomfortable/upset

Pig ear (when they get turned inside out) - goofy Stick out tongue

Sharon, I know you have had your trials with Miss Ari but darn it if she isn't impishly cute!

Gingerbread- eyes. It's like they look into your soul. He really tries to communicate his thoughts by staring into your eyes. I have to say that's a tie with his ears. When he knows that I'm about to put him in the bedroom because I'm going to leave, his ears go straight back and down. It is SO sad! When he's alert his ears are completely up and forward. When he's relazed they just lay on the sides of his head.

Peanut- Also eyes. They can look very pleading (I need something NOW- food, attention, for me to get out of bed) or frantic (separation anxiety) or loving. He'll just look up at your like he's adoring you.

Bon Bon- I'm not that good at reading her yet. I'd say maybe her tongue. lol She's very licky and has different licks; one that says please put me down, happy sweet licks, excited fast forward licks. etc.

Amy, Ari's impish cuteness is the only reason why she is still alive to this day. She's also lucky that her humans have a well developed, albeit twisted sense of humor.

I will have to say she's lately been trying out a new facial expression. It's a loooong, sad, face in which we are convinced she'll begin crying at any moment. Her eyes look watery even! She never used to do this face. I think she's been trying it out to see if it will get her any attention. It just makes us laugh, because we are mean, which in turn makes her face light back up when she realizes it at least amuses us!

Another favorite look of mine is when she has something she's not supposed to. Her eyes have a devilish glint, her ears are a little cocky looking and you can tell she's just laughing and inviting us to "get her" all at once.

Another good one is her "lalalala I can't hear you" look. She rolls her eyes at us and tilts her head a bit away from us. The eye rolling though is something else! I know she's a teenager now but seriously!

I love reading the responses here! It's amazing how many ways they can communicate with us.

I have a Rottweiler and her most expressive features are her ears. I can always tell if she did something bad if her ears are down when I call her name. The raise high when she is happy and move all the way back, almost hidden when looking at her straight on, when she is sleepy. She has large ears for a Rottie and I love them!

    Hi,

Emma's eyes told all. They even got lighter and darker with her moods. She was my most expressive dog. Bean's posture tells it all. It's not any single body part, but head position, tail position, shoulder. Her ears are almost always up. Jewel uses her VOICE to tell you how she feels. Her tail is also extremely expressive.

    Ears and tail, definitely.

Her ears have many different positions, even though she's a floppy-eared mutt.  Her tail is HUGE and so very expressive.
