    Hi Must Love Mutts,
I was born in Kaiserslautern and my familiy lives about 30 min. away( that's if you use the Autobahn). I think you will like it there.
If you need any tips on what to see etc. let me know.

Just thought of this. Kaiserslautern has it's own website. It is in german and english. It's: [linkhttp://www.Kaiserslautern.de]www.Kaiserslautern.de[/link] ( The startpage is in german, but it gives you a choice and you can click on english).
I only lived there the first couple years of my life, but went there often, because my grandparents lived there and my greataunt and uncle which had cows right in town. We would go there in the mornings and get fresh milk. Those are my favorite memories. They also have this big carneval with lots of booths and rides in may and again in october, if I remember right. Things like this are expensive these days thou.

I have a good ear for languages. They sound like music to me. I astounded my crew one day last year, comprised of four mexicans and one honduran. I pointed out how I could hear the difference in accent between an honduran and a mexican. They're not used to a gringo being able to tell the difference or caring about it. But, too me, it was different as english spoken by a briton or australian or kiwi, compared to that of an american. And we have different accents on our own country. When I learned german in high school, our teacher taught us about the slightly different dialects in Germany, which was funny because she spoke german with a texas drawl.

In reply to ron: that's funny.
I think I have the same "problem". My family and friends in germany say I talk funny( guess that's from all the years living inTX), but I don't pass as an american either, because I still have a very strong german accent.

I once worked with a guy who was iranian but raised in Great Britain. Relaxed, he sounded Iranian, excited, he spoke London Cockney. I have a friend from Manchester, England, who speaks Manchester Cockney, which is different. But Texas is starting to wear him down, too, and he's only been here about 5 years.

I was born in California and for the longest time, I had a california accent which is not really, or sort of midwestern. But I've been in Texas since 1974 and it's had it's affect. My brother, who has lived in New Hampshire and now, Maine since the early 90's has lost most of his Texas accent.

You tend to adapt to where you are.

Yes, I was in California for 4 weeks when I was 16 and at the end of my visit I started to use "slang" without noticing it...
People here are alwasy confused when I first speak to them on the phone without any accent and my absolute German last name and when we meet they are startled `cause I`m Asian.
Or when peolpe ask, where`s the street xxx and I answer, they look at me and say, why...your German`s so good. Then I always say...why, thank you, your`s too. [8|]

I live in Bochum, it`s in NRW, I think Kaiserslautern is a few hours away from here. I hope you will like it in Germany. I suppose, your dog`s moving with you? Then there are some things you have to consider...Germany can be very...mhmm, how do I say it best...unfriendly to dog owners...how big is your dog and what breed?
    • Puppy
Dackelfan, thanks for the page on Kaiserslautern. I'm sure it will help with the move.

Susa, hope we can meet sometime when we move. I have lived in germany before, but on the army base. Our dogs are muts. One is about 55 punds, the other is about 65 punds.

Kaiserslautern is about 3hours from Bochum...not that far [;)]
I guess you have to let your dogs register at the city of KL. Are there breeds like stafford, pittbull or bullterrier in them? Or rottweiler? It`s hard for owners of those breeds or mixes of them in Germany, you have to pay higher taxes in some cities (some take 600-700€ ;per year), you must do special tests and your dogs must always wear a muzzle [:@] .You can only "free" him when you do tests with him to show that he is well socialized. That is so since there was the terrible attack of two amstaff terrier 2001 when a little boy was killed on the schoolyard in Hamburg [&o]
