Leaving a Dog Alone During The Day

IMO.....a dog left in a crate for 7-10 hours has nothing else to do BUT sleep.............  What else can they possibly do?  So, if you're watching them from work on a doggie cam, um hello.......it's not like they have any options.  I just think it's cruel.  Again, that's my opinion and I'm not trying to piss anyone off here, but I would not have dogs if that's the life they would have 5, or more days a week.  I feel guilty leaving mine to go to work and they have free run of the house and I go home most days at lunch and I still feel guilty!!!  If they were destructive, I would create an area, i.e. the kitchen or somewhere comfortable (not the bathroom or other small enclosed space) where they could spend their time and not get into any mischief, but where they could maybe see out a window and definitely have their water, toys and bones to occupy their time.....oh, and music or a tv softly playing in the background.  Plus a comfy place to sleep, if that's what they choose to do.

I have not read "all" the posts. I leave my dogs all day. We leave for work at 6:10AM so I do not even get the luxury of spending time with them before work. DH gets home about 4, I get home closer to 5. We spend our evenings with our dogs, walks, the park, classes etc. None of my dogs are crated in the day and they pretty much sleep the day away in their "spots". Belle sacks out on the couch, Max underneath the bay window. Not sure but I think Teddi sleeps in the basement on the floor by Belle. When Teddi was a pup and could not be left all day without bathroom breaks, I had a neighbor (stay at home mom, and her teenage daughter) come in and let Teddi out several times during the day. They wouldn't even accept payment. As Teddi got progressively older, they went longer periods with out letting her out. She was fine. (NEW PARAGRAPH) I too felt 'guilty' about leaving my dog in a crate all day, but I know that is a human thing. The dogs really do not care, of course they would rather be with you than left home alone. If you can leave your dog out good, if you can't the dog will be fine in a crate. There are a lot of people out there that crate all day the whole lives of their dogs. If they get ample exercise daily they will be fine.

Sasha sleeps most of the day when I'm home, and she has full run of the house and the yard.  A basket of toys, cats to busybody, a human to pester if she chose. On a sunny day she might go out for some sunbathing, but other than that she's a snoozy dog.
