    Heartworm and BT mix

I was checking out the local shelters online and found this guy to be on our Shelter here on base. He's a BT mix. I dont know if he's still there. I emailed them with some questions but then thought why not just go there. So im going to in the morning to just take a gander. He had heartworm and someone told me that once they've had it they dont live much longer after that. Only like a few years..like 1-2. Is that true?? And the other thing it says he's not fond of male dogs. I want to talk with them on that and see what he does exactly when it comes to male dogs. And if its something that could be worked on. If it could then I might tell my husband about it and see what he'd think. Its a Foster-to-Adopt. So i might just do it and see how he gets along with Buster. I'd of course bring Buster there first and see how they'd be with each other.

He is a cute guy.  Try this website it goes through all the details of heartworm but it doesn't say anything about shorter life spans. [linkhttp://www.placervillevet.com/canine%20heartworm.htm]http://www.placervillevet.com/canine%20heartworm.htm[/link]

My neighbor's dog tested HW positive about 2 years ago and is doing good besides the fact that they let him roam around and gets into fight with dogs a lot, and is only a miniature dachshund.

IF UNTREATED heartworm kills -- but you can treat them.  There is the vet-administered imiticide, and a longer way treating them over the course of a year with ivermectin (much longer treatment time and very hands on, but it can be easier on the dog)..  But if treated they can have a totally normal lifespan -- this would be an inside dog I assume??

oh he would definately be an indoor dog. We arent even allowed to have dogs live outdoors here on base. My little guy almost had to stay outside one time during a hurricane evacuation. We stayed with some relatives of a guy who evac'd with us in TN. They had a little daschund that lived outside becuase they didnt want dirt and all that stuff in there house. They actually told us Buster had to stay outside at night or if we were to go anywhere. I was really pissed off but I managed to talk them into at least letting him stay inside in a secluded part of the house. I mean yes it is there house but it is my dog! We had left one afternoon to go shopping to de-stress from the hurricane situation and left him there with the families kids that were of highschool age. When we got home it was raining and buster was outside scratchin like hell looking all upset. I got really mad at them and refused to leave again with out him. His paws were raw and starting to bleed becuse they ignored him. He was shaking and looked depressed. I slept in the den that he was allowed in everynight. My DH was embarrassed w/ me and how much I babied him. I almost got a hotel the rest of the time there. He's a small dog..he isnt equipped to be an outdoor dog. Especially if its something he isnt used to. BT's are especialy sensative to temps and are easily emotional dogs. :sigh: I hate remembering that evacuation. My DH though has began to understand why I was the way I was during that time. He was never a dog person and didnt understand but the longer we have Buster the more he himself is turning into a softy.

Ok so I talked with DH. He thinks the little guy is cute and would definately give him a shot BUT since there is the chance we might be moving overseas in the next year if something happens and we cant bring our pets we have back ups to take care of them while we're gone who happens to be my in-laws but they wouldnt want more than Buster and Butters. They have 2 cats already. So DH agree'd that if I found someone to either take him when we left or watch him then I could give him a shot. But things dont look to peachy on this one. To many things against him right now for our family. Im still gonna go look at him tomorow.

Ok I didnt get a chance to go over there today but I did get an email from the dog coordinater there. She said she does not know for sure if he really doesnt like males. He just acts up on the ones that are agressive towards him and being in a shelter is stressful. So he may not be like this in a home. If anything I talked it over with DH and he wouldnt mind fostering this guy till he gets a good home. So Im going tomorow for sure since its my day off. Im gonna take him out and walk him and everything. He's still on Heartworm meds for another 2-3 weeks so it wouldnt be till after that. I'll see if they would let us foster him. I dont know what it is about this little guy but I wanna get him out of the shelter life..
