Boomer

Hi,

Well, Boomer is at our Vets right now getting checked out. He is apparently
fine except for the leg....He will either have to have surgery to repair it again, I
don't know if it wasn't massaged or whatever enough by the foster family or if the
break was just so severe. And then he got sick while he was with another foster family
from apparently the medication so he's had it rough. My Vet is taking new xrays to
see what he can do and whether he should do the surgery or whether we have to take
him to one of the Universities. I'm hoping MSU because they have a Vet school and it's
only an hour a way. My husband graduated from Law School there last year so he
is aquainted with the campus. Boomer will always have a limp, which we don't care
about, I just hope the leg doesn;t have to come off. Does anyone have experience
with having a 3 legged dog? I wonder if they can swim......we have a cottage up north
and I know Boomer would love it.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the leg can be fixed. And we haven't even adopted him
yet!!

Hi Pam...another Michigander here. Maybe you've answered before, but where in MI are you and where "up north"? We're in Petoskey right now but soon to be in Kalkaska....and trying really hard to figure out a time for a mid-west idog gathering.

Back to topic.....I'm really sorry to hear about Boomer. I had a gsd mix who lost a leg to bone cancer and by golly, he did everything with three legs that he'd done with four. THEY adjust to it much more quickly than WE do.

Glenmar,
WOW Our cottage is on Big Twin Lake which is just east of Kalkaska.
We live in GR.
Petoskey certainly has changed from when I was in college and worked up there.
I was concerned because there are stairs going from the cottage to the lake and they are
open back stairs. Although to tell you the truth, the dogs tend to careen down the bank
more than anything else.
Still waiting to hear from Vet.

Good luck and speedy recovery to Boomer!! If it turns out that Boomer is a 3-legged dog, I wouldn't worry that he won't be able to run, swim and play once he is healed. I don't have one, but I have seen a bunch of 3-legged dogs, there is one particularly in our neighborhood that I am thinking of, who act just like 4-legged dogs. They seem to have no idea they are disabled [

What a small world! My nephew is a prof in GR.....I'm thinking Grand Valley?

We'll have to get together sometime this summer....if the dust ever settles from this move!

You might be surprised at just how agile tri-pods actually are. Duke did stairs, hills, everything without a bit of problem.

Could be Grand Valley, Could be Aquinas, Could be Calvin.

If it's a University it's probably GVSU.

He went to Calvin for his undergrad stuff.....and it must be a University since he's got his doctorate and he's teaching post grad students.......he's a whopping 26. Defended his whatever it is they defend just days after his 21st b'day......

Awwww poor Boomer. He's had a rough go of it so far in his short life. IF he has to have his leg amputated, he'll be fine. Dogs do adjust very well. Give him some skritches from me when you get him.

Awww. Poor Bommer I hope all goes well and his leg gets better if he does loose the leg he will get along just as well with 3 legs especially at his age now he will recover easily.

Hi Pam - sorry you and Boomer have to deal with something like this & we'll keep fingers & paws crossed that Boomer gets to keep his leg. No personal experience myself, but I've seen lots of people in the park with 3 legged dogs and they seem able to do everything a 4 legged dog can.
