    black labrador mix

    Hi,
We are thinking of add another dog to our family and are looking at a black male
lab mix, he might be still a puppy but not by much, we haven't gone to see him yet,
just his picture. ? My  mom had a purebreed black lab and she was really large-
84 lbs when she died (but she was overweight) and she did shed. There was hair
all over. I don't really know if it was because she didn't get brushed much. Does
anyone have experience with black labs shedding a lot. Our dog is a lab/pit mix
and she hardly ever sheds, just when we give her a bath and a little in bed. Any
advice? I don't know what the male lab is mixed with.

My dog is a black Lab/Golden cross. I groom her every day and that keeps her shedding to a minimum. She doesn't lose too much hair.

I have a Lab, and of course, he drops hair. If we only had him, it wouldn't be that noticable, but our border collie/something huge mix sheds insanely and his black hair is pretty noticable on tan carpet. Brown (lab) has a very thin summer coat so once shedding season comes and goes, he's not very messy.

Brushing frequently will definitely get rid of a lot of the dead hair waiting to fall.

Labs and lab/mixes are constant shedders.

Well rats. I really wanted a lab mix. Any suggestions for a dog that won't  get too big (our dog is
a medium size one, 53lbs., but she's  a lab/pit mix and it's muscle, not height) We may still go with
the lab...we both have allergies on topof it and I have asthma. I thought the reason my moms dog
shedded so bad was because she wasn't getting, maybe it's just their nature. I'd love a vizsla lab
mix but I can never find them here in mid-Michigan. pam

If I don't vacuum every day or at least every other day I would be lost in a sea of multi colored dog hair.  But they are worth it!!!

I use a carpet rake and gather up enough hair to make another dog and throw it away and then vacuum. It's a never-ending battle with no victory in sight.

Max is a (I think) lab/shepherd mix and he sheds like you wouldn't believe. I just sweep up little piles of honey colored hair off the wood floors and vacuum the carpets. Silly me.  I thought that short haired dogs didn't shed. [:D]

thanks for you advice on black lab, we'll have to meet him and see. Also
trying to check out vizsla rescue. I'm trying to add pictures (finally got Mocha at
the cottage) so we'll see if anything else comes up in my "embeded in post" trial.

Silly me.  I thought that short haired dogs didn't shed. [:D]

Hahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaa   ROFLMAO....wait, wait while I pick myself up off the floor.....I thought I was the only one conned into that one!!!!  hahahahahahahaaaa[:D][8D]

Brushing will help, as will regular bathing of the dog.  I'm allergic to dogs also, but since I keep them pretty clean I'm not too bothered by it as well as keeping the mini-Nigels and mini-Sydneys to a minimum.

    OK

I apologize for that HUGE picuture of Mocha-I finally  got thelittle
picture by my name and I was trying for some pictures in the signature and look what happened.
We are going to look at a 9month old black lab mix tomorrow.
I realize that with a mix you can't  really tell, but does anyone know when a lab generally stops  growing?  This dog is less than 50 lbs and medium size and the foster family doesn't know what  he is mixed with. He was hit  by a car a few months ago and taken to the
shelter in Muskegon and a vet set his leg and he's been with a foster
family ever since. We are driving over tomorrow with our dog to see him. I don't remember when Moch Jean stopped growing, we
got her at 5 months and I think she stopped by a year anyway.

I have a Chocolate Lab and a Black Lab/husky, They both shed year round, but this time of year I brush them daily to try and get as much as it off outside as possible. I use one of those looped deals, you know its metal and teethed and you can unloop it to be straight or keep it in the loop? someone here will know the right name, but it works great get rid of dead hair ( you gotta do it outside though) the other brushes I've found don't work as well on short haired dogs.
And just on a second note... I didn't notice the dog hair untill I got a second dog. I think the question you want to be asking is how much more hair is one more dog? All of a sudden, its in climps around the house. Really, if I don't use the "magic wand" loop I have to triple how many times I vacuum.

Tha "magic wand" is called a 'shedding blade' (really, this is the name). They are awesome. If you get one make sure to get the one with two handle that can open up (some are made into a permanent loop). I prefer the one with leather handle because my hands can get sweaty with the plastic dipped handles.

Silly me, I thought my first dog as an adult owner had beautiful coat - never thought about the shedding hair. Muffy was a Old English Sheepdog - huge amounts of hair - I lost the dog for a few weeks every spring! Top it off with a burgandy sofa and you can see the problem. Add to that a lab cross, 6 cats and a stable full of horses - you get the picture! We didn't charge guests for the side of hair in thier food! ha ha

Somehow I thought a Golden/Irish mix would be less work - not! A good brush and a shedding blade or undercoat rake are man's 2nd best friend[:D]

You need to post pics. Unless you already have, in which case I will go look for them.

Kudos to you for applying some thought and consideration before you get a dog. Getting a dog that fits your lifestyle goes a long way towards a long, rewarding life for that dog.
