    Callie....Halp Pleeze!

     Or anyone really.

Kali started Daycare 3 weeks ago.  She only goes Monday and Tuesday, but its been enough to make her sick.  I kind of expected it, but I would like her to get better now please.  She's not the "feeling badly" kind of sick.  She's not feverish, or tired or anything, but her nose is running constantly and her breathing just sounds bad.  I've noticed that the majority of the kids there have runny noses too.

Any ideas on what I can give her to give her a bit of a boost?  I found some echinacea (sp?) for kids.  Its in a little bottle and I'm supposed to give her 2 drops 3 or 4 times a day at the first sign of a cold or when she might be exposed to illness.  Is that ok to give her long term?  Or should I even be giving that to her?  What else is there?  Vit C?  Garlic?  I'm clueless as you can tell.

She's never really been sick.  Never had breathing problems.  Bit of winter dry skin, but no other signs of asthma like Kale.  She's a pretty healthy kid normally, and a good eater.  If that helps.

Dairy is a MAJOR inflammation increaser. Eliminating cow's milk very very often will stop a sniffly, drippy nose.

Echinacea doesn't work, long term. Swicthing herbs regularly (I do it every 3 weeks) DOES. Just switch to a different immune herb in a few weeks (or even at the end of the bottle is probably fine). If you like the brand of echinacea you got, just use a different herb from the same line.

Do you have a moist air humidifier for her room? This always helps my son who's colds sometimes lead to croup.I have one that I can add Vick's Vaposteam to.We also use Airborn tablets disolved in water. They contain C,several of the B's and some herbals.Lots of liquids and avoid dairy as it promotes mucose.Hope she feels better soon.

Why not try giving her Oscillococcinum?  You put the contents of one of the little tubes under her tongue (it's sweet --she won't mind it at all).  Repeat in SIX HOURS (and don't try to stretch it to 8 -- this works on the body's clock so even if you have to wake her up DO IT).  But you give it just THREE times (18 hours) and that's all.

Don't continuously give her herbs to boost the immune system.  Do it for a few weeks and then stop.  You don't want to constantly batter the immune system -- then it will forget how to turn on and off as it should.

She should probably takes some supplements -- Vit C -- several low doses a day is better than one big one.  Maybe even kids multi-vitamins.  those you can give on an on-going basis.

I'd wonder if there is something at the daycare that might be a big allergen -- maybe trees around or do they have a dusty parking lot?  You might want to try a homeopathic remedy for her for allergies -- won't make her sleepy at all.  Hylands has a good allergy one, and so does Cabot.  Homeopathics won't yank the body's chain quite so severely and you won't run into side effects or overdose that way.

Thanks all.  I think I will cut out her dairy for a bit.  Is Soy ok?  She likes Soy Milk and we always have it because Kale is allergic to milk.

I'm not sure if its allergies...maybe to cleansers?  I get the feeling of walking into a stark hospital type steril place when I walk in there.  The outdoor play area for the toddlers is unistone with a sand box on one side, but right now its covered in snow as is the majority of outdoors up here.  The trees are bare.  But I know that I get stuffy when I put too much bleach in my wash water for the bathroom or use lysol for something, maybe that's it?

Callie, I still haven't found that Oscillococcinum anywhere.  Maybe I'll do an image search so I will at least know what I'm looking for.  I have no idea how its pronounced and the pharmacist looked at me like I had 3 heads when I tried to ask her about it.  LOL.  Is it ok to give a toddler?  She's 23 months and weighs 27 pounds.

Soy milk is fine, for me. I like almond milk, better, though. Have you ever tried it? It works better, in recipes, and the chocolate kind tastes like awesome!!

Oscillococcinum -- if you can SAY it then you've been using it for a while LOL.

You will find it at CVS but it's pricey ($8 for the one battery box of 3 vials).  Wal-mart usually carries it in the double pack for about $10 (2 battery pack of 6 vials).  THAT is a good price. Virtually any health store carries it.

You won't find it by asking a pharmacist -- it's a homeopathic and they just don't DO that kinda stuff in a pharmacy *grin*.

Yes you can give it to kids.

I should talk to you on the phone and teach you a bit about homeopathics so it makes sense to you -- they don't medicate you -- they simply 'nudge' your body to do what it already wants to do.  So it won't clash with any regular medicine.
