    Urgghh - Identify theft! (mrstjohnson)

Someone hacked into DH's ebay and yahoo accounts - and probably paypal.  I am so mad.  We are literally leaving in less than 24 hours for vacation and now we have to put a hold on everything (account wise)!  I am so mad!  I guess I am happy that it happened today instead of tomorrow because we would never have known.  But now we are going to be paranoid checking on things constantly from vacation.  We have put a hold on everything (accounts, etc.) with the exception of one credit card that we need to check into the hotel.  Since we are paying cash for spending money and the hotel is already paid for, etc. we don't have to worry about that.  We have Lifelock so we are probably safe, but it's just so frustrating!!!  My identity was stolen last year and my accounts were cleaned out - this is just like deja vu - expect at least this time we caught them before they stole all our funds!

BTW Ebay is useless except to say, you should change your password - really, no s**t!  DH buys and sells a lot on ebay so changing his name is really going to hurt.  Thank goodness he never leaves money in his paypal account!  I am annoyed with him since he did confess that he had the same password for everything and it was pretty weak.  I have warned him a million times about that...now he's listening to me!

Oh no!!!!!! What a massive bummer!! I hope everything gets resolved for you guys quickly. And, perhaps more importantly, that you have an awesome vacation despite it all! Wink

Gosh Lisa, I'm really sorry but do not let this ruin your vacation. Just curious, but how did you know anything had happened?

DH got a bunch of emails from ebay saying his items had posted.  Literally as he is finding this out, someone was in his yahoo email account trying to change the password.  He immediately got on the phone to ebay had his account frozen - got a hold of yahoo told them what was going on, etc.  What is spooky is I sent him a message via email saying "change all your passwords immediately, etc.", when I spoke to him later, he said he never got the email but it was marked as read and in his trash - this person was reading his email.  Talk about feeling violated.

So now I had to change all of my stuff too, just in case they make the connection between the two of us.  LiIterally, if he wasn't on the computer while this was happening, we would have totally missed and been completely screwed when we got back from vacation.  The person was trying to sell $9000 worth of boots.  Basically what they do is, sell the merchandise, collect the funds through PayPal and then leave you stuck with no merchandise and a whole lot of people pissed off - ruining your ebay account.

That is very spooky. I'll have to tell my husband to be on alert for stuff like that. We get email msgs from EBay all the time and I just delete them. I don't do much buying/selling on there, but my husband does. I didn't realize what they could do if they hacked into your account - ugh!

Wow, that's crazy. I'm glad you were able to catch it quickly. I'm going to have to change my passwords... I usually use the same one everywhere because it's easy to remember... aka I'm lazy.

I had that on my old ebay account. The email address I used through there and paypal got shut down and the credit cards frozen. Thankfully no money was taken out but the scam they were trying to pull on me was that I had bought a camera for 400$ in one invoice, then the same camera for 5000$ in another invoice. Since I don't buy cameras off Ebay, it didn't work for me. Lol.  I got intouch with Paypal and got it sorted out.

But because of that scare, I keep a written list by the computer of what I've boughten off Ebay, how much and when.

I use 3 main passwords but they're in a different language and 9 letters long so they're a bit hard to figure out. Lol. Big Smile
