    Glenda

OK this is about my mothers Germ. Shep again. She brought him to the vet today for yearly shot. He has lost 3 lbs. since his last visit. The vet says he is testing him for a common pancrease disease only found in Sheps. He said if Cyrano is found with this disease treatment is $80/week or too buy dog pancrease and grind it and feed it to him raw. Have you ever heard of this? Also Should this not be covered under a health guarantee by the breeder? I told you he is just over 2 years old. I don't know anything about agreements or what is involved in a health guar. Thanks

Like... buy actual pancreas? Pancreas isn't very expensive. Why does the vet say it's so much? That sounds odd to me...

This is not something I'm familar with, but remember, I'm not a breeder.  I would think that the FIRST thing to check would be for parasites.  Coxcidia (sp) is a common parasite responsible for weight loss.

Will go do some research and see if I can find this ailment.

Here's a link to check it out: http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/germanshepherd/germansheparticle2.htm#vwd

There IS a pancreatic insufficency and it's described pretty well here.

HOWEVER, I think the vet might just be jumping the gun and I'd want a fecal done FIRST.

I'm not clear if this is something that can be health tested for or not.  If it IS, then yes, the breeders stock should have been tested prior to breeding and it should be covered in the health guarentee, but this seems to be more prevelent in gsds

Thanks so much for the help.

I sure hope that this turns out to NOT be the cause with you Mom's dog, but even if it is, it doesn't sound like a huge big deal to treat.  However, knowledge is power and I'm not real sure the vet has quite enough to properly treat this dog, so your folks might want to see if they can't find a vet who is more familar with gsds.
