    Anyone interested in LGDs...

I was surfing around, as I do, and came across a really interesting paper on LGD origins, history and current use around the world, including (hooray hooray) a large section on Maremmas and LGDs in Italy which is my personal focal point of interest but there is tons of info about other areas and breeds.

It's a PDF, but if anyone wants to read it let me know and I can direct you to it or email it as an attachment.

I'd be interested. I like learning about that kind of stuff, I don't have any plans to ever get a LGD, but.... still =]

I hate to appear stupid or maybe uninformed is a better word but I see LGD on here alot what exactly does that mean.

An LGD is a Livestock Guardian Dog...a blanket term to describe the several breeds which have been developed over thousands of years to protect flocks and herds of animals from predators.  They are mostly used to protect sheep and goats, though they are also used with cattle and, in one notable example, a Maremma sheepdog has been successfully used to protect the population of a species of endangered penguin in Australia.  The penguin population has grown significantly since the experiment started.

Thanks you so much!  I guess some times I see things on here that I dont quite understand and I just dont think to ask.   I think I have one of those "LGD's"  not sure if a Bernese Mountain Dog (Hot Shot) is considered an LGD or not.  He is more like a LSD (Large Spoiled Dog) lol.

I forgot to tell you I would be very interested in the information you found.   I think its awesome that they use them for Penquins!
