Plus, I think it helps with attention span and building their imagination. Riley already plays pretend with her little people and I think that is good
Definitely. If you are always there, telling them what to play, how to pretend, they may learn to act, but I don't think it really helps the imagination that much.
Case in Point. When Kale is home, he can play for hours with his legos, or his Bionicles. He's also a Gameboy/DS freak, but that's another thing all together. He can dress up with Kali and play wizards or whatever. He's wonderful at entertaining her. Here.
At my mom's? Not a chance. My mom is one of those people that will just put off the housework until the kids are in bed. She won't take a minute for herself. She STILL entertains Kale the majority of the time he's there. And he is completely incapable of entertaining himself over at her house. He can sit at the computer and lose himself or under the table playing with his gameboy. But other than that, she's got to be right there, playing cards or helping him build a fort, etc. And he's 9 and now he demands it. If she had just given him some alone time when he was little, I think things would have been different for her now. He's capable obviously, he does it here, and has for years.
