I confess to watching that show, as well. I've dubbed it "Sopranos on Two Wheels."
I was friends with the Banshees MC for a bit back in 1984. Went to a lake party with them. They were nice people. The only person who was a problem was another guest who thought he had to "prospect" by creating a scene. He drank most of a fifth of Black Jack and broke the bottle and tried to start a fight with my friend, Joe. The chapter pres calmly ejected him from the scene. The next day, the troublemaker got an education on manners.
I was once approached by the Rebels MC. And could have gotten stickers and patches from the Skulls MC. The reason I turned down those patches is because I am used to the old school clubs. Wearing the patches and stickers can get you in trouble 3 different ways. A) people in the club who earned their colors and you haven't. B) other clubs who may not like them and you are wearing their colors. C) At the time, police would often "profile" people wearing colors.
An old friend of mine rode with the Scorpions MC. He had the coolest bike. A '74 Sportster bored out to 1,300 cc, 7 gears, and nitrous. It used to be a drag bike. Top official time was 179 mph and it was tuned to cruise at 120 mph. Chopped frame 8 feet long, commissioned blue fire paint job and gold plated wheel spikes and trim.
But the SOA is based somewhat on the Hell's Angels. The three patch insignia. The back tattoo for lifers. And the prolific murder in the name of club business. An interesting book to read is "Hell's Angels: Three men can keep a secret if two are dead." These are bad guys. I lost all respect for the Hell's Angels when an innocent child was blown up by a car bomb meant for another.
But like a train wreck, it's hard not to watch to see what they get away with.
These days the only clubs I might want to belong to are ones such as the Retreads. The only condition is that you be over 40 and I've qualified for some time. The other one is one town south of me. Brotherhood of the Third Wheel. You can see the pres carrying his grandson on his trike. A number of people in that club prefer trikes. But they're all family guys.
