    Like a surgeon...hey!

I spayed a cat today! And neutered a cat today! For the first time!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just was very excited. Wow. They are all client-owned animals for low-cost spay/neuter, we do them for out third-year surgery class. Miss Sami and Mr Rooney are now officially all fixed up!

Man. Doing surgery on a living, breathing, able-to-bleed animal using extremely stringent sterile technique was something else, let me tell you.  Just a late night thought.

    Hey! congrats!

Ahem.  I've got a pair of kittenz that needs spayz.  Need more practice?

Just kidding.  I've got to find a local low-cost spay.  I love my vet but we just spent $1500 on this and that and are still paying it off, and we'll be spending a few thousand on me before all is said and done.

Oh man yeah they were shaking. It still amazes me how little blood there is whenyou do abdominal surgery! It is NOTHING like what is shown on TV - all the surgeons with bloody gloves and arms - if you have that much blood on you, you did something wrong!   My instructor (nothing like a board-certified surgeon peering over your shoulder as you do your first spay) kept telling me "Kris, you're being too tentative! Come on, get in there! Break that suspensory ligament! Don't be tentative!" Easy for you to say, doc :)

The experience was also good because of the little things - like how we didn't give unnecessary prophylactic antibiotics since we did a sterile surgery (and very, er, rear-end-retentive sterile at that! if your gown even brushed against a cabinet or floor, you had to change it) Boo to unnecessary antibiotics! All the different fancy suture patterns are very neat as well. I don't have the calm stomach or emotional stamina to be a hardcore surgeon I think, but it is indeed very interesting

When I saw the title, all I could think of was Weird Al's song, "Like a Surgeon"!  Now the danged thing is going to be stuck in my head all day tomorrow.

     Congrats on the procedures!
