Kidney stones anyone? (janobonano)

I'm feeling very grateful that I've never had one too and hopefully the worst is over for you.

Interesting about morphine and how many people react badly to it. It seems that everyone I know who's been given it has gotten horribly sick. Doesn't that make you wonder why they use it so much? They gave it to me in the ER when I had a burst ovarian cyst and the ER nurse said "I'm going to inject this very, very slowly because it tends to make people feel very loopy and nauseous". I'm not sure if it was his technique or what, but I didn't feel sick at all and it took the pain away almost instantly. I know 2 people who just recently given it after surgery though and were violently ill until the morphine was stopped.

Janice, that must of been so scary for you!  Hope you are back to your old self very soon.

I get them too...my first experience with one was almost exactly like yours janobonano...I thought it was cramps, but then it just got worse and worse, pretty quickly, and I had my husband rush me to the hospital. Definitely worse than childbirth...I was throwing up, crying, in the fetal position...the worst part is, I was allergic to the antibiotic they gave me, levaquin, and didn't realize for several days. I was bedridden for a week from a combination of pain and dizziness/sickness from pain killers....I ended up having surgery to remove the stone after a week. I have had them since a couple times, but never to the point of that first one.

My daughter just had one,  and yikes poor you!  She went into the hospital after 5 days of peeing in a filter. They knocked her out and did a laser proceadure, she was home the same day but with a stint for (gasp) three weeks.  Her intense pain was gone quickly and left with simply the desore to have the stint removed.  She drank huge amounts of water and cranberry juice to no real avail.  She ended up on modified bed rest for a week. She has gotten the stint out (yeah!!) Her doctor said shei s allowed to drink water, gatoraide and fresh made lemon juice. No coffee or blended coffee drinks, no sodas, no juices and no dairy.  She can not eat chocolate,  and other foods that promote the building of stones. She is the second daughter to have one. Her step sister in California also had KS and she was put on simular restrictions.

    Best of Luck !

Janice, you poor thing!  Under any circumstances the pain must've been unbearable, but not being able to breastfeed only makes things worse, I'm sure.  My neighbor has a recurring problem with stones, and one of the last ones occurred early during a pregnancy.  She was rushed to the hospital fearing the worst - - so she was "relieved" it was a stone, even though she had the horrible experience you described.

I've never had morphine, but I don't react well to other major pain medications.  I had my tonsils out when I was about 27, and they gave me Demoral (spelling?) -- all night I kept hearing Kate Smith singing "God Bless America."  I thought it was coming from outside my bedroom window (we lived in an apartment complex).  Total hallucination.  I decided to switch to Tylenol after that!

I hope you're feeling better soon --- I'm sorry you have to wait for a potty surprise!  What are supposed to do?   Put it in a jar and carry it to the doctor's office?  Yuck!

Yes, that's exactly what I have to do!! They gave me one of those little sealed cups that you pee in at the doc's.

So far, no ker-plunk yet...  Sleep

That's interesting, Bonita. They didn't tell me much about any special diet, but they did say to drink lots of citrus juices. And if I drink milk, I have to balance it with a glass of water.

There is no magic to gettting it to pass once it starts - circa 1900 they served beer in hospitals to kidney stone patients because it makes you pee - so you could try that LOL - just keep lots and lots of fluids going.  If it has made it to your bladder the next bit is slightly easier because the tube is shorter.

What a good idea! I haven't had a drink since before I was pregnant (I didn't drink much before anyway), but every once in a while a beer sounds good. Since I've been nursing, I still haven't been able to drink. Although alcohol+current meds might make for an interesting/not-so-good combination...

Call up your pharmacy and ask! Say it's a "drug interaction question" and they should put you on the line with someone smart.
