    Halloween horror story...

My friends and I were trick or treating together....and our neighbors dog escaped from his yard and was following us. He wouldnt let us catch him and would run when we got too close but followed us for about 15 mins. We rang the door bell or a house and the lady opened her door, she had the phone on her head, holding a dog and a bowl of candy....the dog escapes and my neighbors dog ATTACKS it for no reason. This dog was shaking this dog like a rag doll and had it pinned to the ground. All of us were screaming not knowing what to do and the owner grabs her dog by the leg and starts PULLING it...probably one of the worst things you can do (the dog was holding it by the neck). We were smacking the dog not knowing what to do and all of us are screaming at the top of our lungs. The dog stopped after a couple mins (which seamed like 10 mins) and jus trotted off! My friend grabs the vicious dog by the collar quickly and found its owners in their car driving around looking for him. I dont know what he told his owners but he did mention the attack but they did nothing and drove away. The vicious dog was a lab mix and the dog that was getting attacked was a pretty small mix...probably 20ish pounds. The little dog was in shock and could hardly breath and had a large tear in its neck and was prettty bloody. We apologized and told her it wasnt our dog and explained the whole story and offered information if she wanted it. She didnt want anything and picked up her dog and ran into the house crying. I feel horrible....

Don't. It's not your fault. Your neighbor's should have put the dog into a more secure area. I'm sorry that happened thou! I know that poor women is horrified, and it's horrible to watch!

Maybe you could go back to the house of the dog that was attacked and offer the information again.

I'm sure the lady was in as much shock as the dog and wasn't thinking clearly when she went into the house.

If she still doesn't want any information at least you can say you did all you could do to help.

Poor little dog. Im glad I had my boys all locked up halloween night in crates. :( I like the idea about maybe visiting the little dogs owner to see if the dog is alright.

Wow what an awful end to an evening meant to be fun !!  While you are not responsible I am sure you will worry over this for sometime. I would really suggest you consider that rather than internalize this you just try ot develope a plan on how you might react in the future should something like this happen near you again. Chances are pretty good you are the most familiar with dog person in your group of friends.

By using your purse or bag you can yell, stamp your feet and holler , swinging whatever you may have in your hands to drive the attacking dog away.  If the fight was dierected towards a child or older person and you felt you needed to phyically interfere stay well away from the head and front of the dog. Grabbing the rear legs and pulling them UP you remove the dog's traction and balance rendering them less likely to want to continue the fight.  I would prefer you stay away though and simply kick rather than getting your hands or face close to an angry dog. Generally the simple loud noises and swinging of something in your hands will disuade most dogs intent on causing harm.

Taking your cell phone you can always text the address of the dog and it's owners and even the time of the incident to yourself or a friend making a record of the attack that would be beneficial to the owner of the smaller dog should they take it to court. Stopping by and giving the owner of that small dog your name and phone number would be both a kindness and the adult thing to do.

This is exactly why I keep my dogs crate don nights like Halloween or the 4th of July, there is no way I would chance them getting into a fight with a stray. I would be horrified and worry constantly over the shots and what possible damage this could do to the excellent temperaments I have in my dogs.

I am just glad to hear you are okay!
