Wow what an awful end to an evening meant to be fun !! While you are not responsible I am sure you will worry over this for sometime. I would really suggest you consider that rather than internalize this you just try ot develope a plan on how you might react in the future should something like this happen near you again. Chances are pretty good you are the most familiar with dog person in your group of friends.
By using your purse or bag you can yell, stamp your feet and holler , swinging whatever you may have in your hands to drive the attacking dog away. If the fight was dierected towards a child or older person and you felt you needed to phyically interfere stay well away from the head and front of the dog. Grabbing the rear legs and pulling them UP you remove the dog's traction and balance rendering them less likely to want to continue the fight. I would prefer you stay away though and simply kick rather than getting your hands or face close to an angry dog. Generally the simple loud noises and swinging of something in your hands will disuade most dogs intent on causing harm.
Taking your cell phone you can always text the address of the dog and it's owners and even the time of the incident to yourself or a friend making a record of the attack that would be beneficial to the owner of the smaller dog should they take it to court. Stopping by and giving the owner of that small dog your name and phone number would be both a kindness and the adult thing to do.
This is exactly why I keep my dogs crate don nights like Halloween or the 4th of July, there is no way I would chance them getting into a fight with a stray. I would be horrified and worry constantly over the shots and what possible damage this could do to the excellent temperaments I have in my dogs.
I am just glad to hear you are okay!
