Savannah show and CERF testing

    Savannah show and CERF testing

Anybody going to be at the Savannah show, this  year? I was going to do Emma's CD, but I think we'll just do rally. We have a whole new crop of kinks to work out before I feel like she's ready for the obedience ring (and I want high scores, dang it!).  Ena B will be showing in conformation, all four days. That'll be fun! We'll stay at the show sight.

Anyhow, they're doing CERF testing at the show, on Saturday, and Sunday. It's only $25 per dog, and both girls' breeds are prone to eye problems (PRA and PLL for the PRT and I'm not sure for the Cresteds, but they get CERF testing, LOL). I'm probably going to do it for both of them. Ena is ridiculously friendly, and Emma is mild mannered, enough, as long as nothing painful is being done. Should I bring both dogs at once, or one at a time? They both have a crate in the trailer where they can be quiet afterwards, but I've never done CERF on anybody, so I don't know how it goes, for them. Of course, I'll be asking my show buddy, since she's done all this before, but the more experiences I hear, the better I feel about things:)

I need to find a CERF test for Kenya, hers expired in Feb. 2008.  I think I'll just do it once more.  She has some tiny scars on her eyes that don't affect her vision, but I panicked and thought it was pannus.  She had them for the previous CERF exam though and the eye specialist said they are nothing.  I'd like one more exam just to be sure.  Usually pannus starts showing up around age 3 and she turns 5 today so if she gets one more good exam I'll call it good since she isn't bred.

     HAPPY BIRTHDAY KENYA!!!

Emma is WAY spayed, but she's 5, now, and since her breed has these issues, why not, right? Ena is not spayed, but highly likely she'll become that way when I get sick of showing her and losing or she finishes (whichever comes first). *shrugs* It's cheap, and IF she's got a problem, I'll call her breeder and let her know to have her dogs checked.

The only thing about CERF testing at shows is that it dilates their pupils, and that can be hard to deal with after the test if you are showing. If you have a blanket to throw over the crates or something similar they should be fine, but generally I've avoided CERFing at shows because Luna needs to be able to show.

Could I CERF them in the evening and show the next morning?

When I had Keela CERFed earlier this month I wasn't showing, but, the club hosting the clinic was scheduling appointments according to ring times if you were entered. I'd contact the person doing the scheduling and see what they say. If you show before your appointment, she should be find by the next day. Though they told me it would only take 2 hours for Keela's eyes to go back to normal and it took her from 10 that morning when they administered the drops till almost 10 that night before they started retracting. I don't know if size matters when it comes to how many drops they should use, but they were giving every dog 2 drops per eye. Keela only weighs 8 pounds, so I wonder if they shouldn't have done but one per eye?

Emma and Ena are small dogs, too (not as small as Keela, but Ena's only 11 lbs). They're not doing appts. It's a first come, first serve thing, BUT.... They're doing it from 12-5 on Sat and on Sun. I think I'll try to take them immediately after they're finished showing and let them sleep it off.
