Kali Won't Eat

    Kali Won't Eat

She's not feeling great today.  I totally expected it since she started Daycare on Monday and her previous exposure to other kids has been minimal.  But I've given her Dimetapp and Tylenol just to get her nose to stop running and to take down her fever.  She seems to be feeling alot better, but she won't eat.  She's drinking fine, but won't eat.  Should I push the issue?  Should I give her something like icecream that I know she'll eat anyway?  Or should I let her skip her supper?  It seems so odd to me, but my first instinct is to trust her.  Then I think, She's not even 2 for doG's sake!  LOL.  What would you do?  She's normally a great eater, which is why I ask.

I wouldnt make her. Samantha is a great eater also. But when she's sick and you try to make her eat well let's just say you're gonna be cleaning up a mess and having her to take medicine all over again because it also came up.

Addisen doesn't want to eat a lot when she's congested. If I force her, I'm in for a lengthy session of screaming and crying. When she's ready for something, I give her what she really likes and try to keep her filled with as much liquids as she's willing to take.

Mucinex has a kid's liquid formula. I've never seen it at Walmart, although I'm sure it's stocked by others and in places like Walgreens, CVS, etc. I bought ours at a local grocery store.

I wouldn't push it.  Just make sure she is drinking alot to keep her hydrated.  Riley was sick a couple of weeks ago, didn't want to eat anything but drank a ton.  I would say OK for the ice cream - jello too - maybe pudding?

Keep her hydrated but stay away from dairy products. Dairy makes the congestion worse.

I would try and get her to eat crackers. I can't even remember why, (mine are 20,18 and 16)  I think it was so the medicine doesn't upset her stomach.

Thanks all.  Those were kind of my thoughts too.  She went to bed without supper.  And the dairy thought crossed my mind too.  My son is allergic to milk and gets really badly congested when he has some, so its not a far stretch to think that would happen.  We ran out of milk last night anyway, and Tyler forgot to get some on is way home.  She drank some apple juice and some soy milk as well as some water.  I think she'll be ok pretty quick.  She was a little more tired than normal at bedtime, but in good spirits (she got new jammies).  She's never really been sick before.  The little colds she's had have passed in a day or two.

    Thanks again.

I have to ask... jammies with feet? or pretty nightgown?

hope she feels better soon. POst nasal drip can often give them a sore throat which can manifest in not wanting to eat. You might check in there to rule out swollen tonsils too with a flashlight.

maybe offer chicken soup. Even when sick mine will usually take soup.

Well, she still has a runny nose, but she's in much better spirits this morning.  She ate a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and she's snacking on popcorn right now.  If the congestion would just go away she'd be fine I think.  Her breathing sounds terrible, kind of like she's gasping, but I think thats because she's forced to breath through her mouth and she never does that.  She's always been a nose breather.

Gina, I didn't think about a sore throat.  That may have been the case last night, but I didn't see your reply till now.  Ah well, she's not like my skinny Kale, she could afford to miss a meal...lol.

3girls, its a pretty new nightie.  It has Tinkerbell on it(the fairy, not the dog unfortunately) and she's never had a nightie before.  She got a whole bag of clothes from my niece's niece yesterday, hand-me-downs which are always fun because you get a whole whack of them at once rather than one or two outfits.  Today she's got a new jean skirt and a hooded sweater, very cute.

I'm glad she's feeling better, Candace.

If a kid doesn't want to eat, I think you should just let it go.  AS LONG AS SHE IS DRINKING Smile  Now if it were to go on for an extended period of time, I might be concerned, but just over a couple of days.... nah.  Don't worry.  On the other hand if you start offering yummy junk food, you may start a bad habit that will continue long after the illness has gone away!
