And the job hunt begins...

    And the job hunt begins...

So, I just found out I'm going to be laid off from my job.  I've worked here for 5 years, and so I've been out of the job-hunting market for quite some time.  Anyone have any advice for me?  The good news (if you can call it that) is that I'm getting a month's severance, so I will have a whole month to look for a job.  The bad news...I seriously doubt I'll find a job that will let me bring Harry to work with me like I do now.

    This is so depressing. Crying

I'm really sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I think there are an awful lot of people who are going thru the same thing. Every time I listen to the news, I hear of more company layoffs.

First thing to do is create a resume and if you already have one, then update it. Have someone review it for you and see if they can give you any tips to improve it. Then start looking in the paper. craigslist, and any other place that lists jobs in your area. Since you only have one month, you might also want to contact a temp agency.

Thanks.  BTW, I the thing about the "only" bad news was about Harry was my lame attempt at a joke, but it is one of the first things that popped in my head.  I know you idoggers can understand that, lol.

I just told my BF that tonight I am allowed to wallow in my misery, and then tomorrow I will have a whole new attitude...that this is the beginning of something new and better.  He's been telling me for years now that I should find another job, and he is right, it just totally stinks that I have to do it when the economy is so bad and the candidate pool is more competitive.

I have my resume up until my current job, so it won't be hard to add that to it.  My mom is going to tweak it for me...she is a fantastic writer and can make things sound better than I can.  I also have some friends who are recruiters who I'm sure won't mind looking it over for me.  I just got off the phone with my best friend.  She told me about looking on Craigslist.  I had no idea people posted job openings there, but she said that is how she found her current job, so I'm definitely going to check it out.  I plan to network my friends here to see if any of their companies have openings.  I have two friends who have a ton of contacts through their sales jobs, and they've both offered to help (as well as being fantastic references, which they've already offered).  And...this is nuts....my family all live in North Carolina and I'm in Georgia...I called my brother this afternoon to tell him (cuz we're close, and he's gone through this before), and he must have told his girlfriend.  She called my mom and told her that her company's regional HQ are in Duluth (the town I live in) and she'd already sent out an email to see what openings they may have so she can let me know.

I'm a bit overwhelmed at how sweet and helpful everyone is being.  It means a lot, really, and thanks to you idoggers, too.  It really does show how can we all can help each other out during difficult times, especially since we often don't realize how much of an impact we have on each other.  So, thanks you guys!!!  Ok, here come the tears again....

We run ads for our teacher openings in papers like the L.A. Tims and S.F. Chronicle (very expensive) and use a state education bulletin board service, but we get the most replies from the Craigslist postings. I think because it's easy to access online, it gets more traffic.

It sounds like you've got a great network of family and friends and I honestly believe that's the best way to find a new job. I also think that as stressful as it is, it can be a great time to reevaluate what your goals are. The timing stinks, but there's still going to be opportunities for good, hard workers, so try not to stress about it too much.

    OMG, that's the hardest part!!

Also because I've been thinking a lot lately about what I really want to do (ha...a 31 year old pondering what she wants to be when she grows up), and it's so hard to come up with something.  I know I would be happiest working with animals, so I'm definitely going to see what's out there where I can work with dogs or cats or horses.  I was very privileged to have worked an internship at the Duke University Primate Center when I was younger.  I loved it, even cleaning out the lemur poo!!  It was just the coolest thing and I adored every minute of it.  But, I'll have to find out if there's anything out there that would put me back on that track.  A far cry from my current and past boring office jobs, but hey, at this point, I'll be happy anywhere, even if I have to work two jobs.

Thanks again for the support.  i-doggers rock!!!
