Does Anyone make their own Collars?

I was talking with a friend today about how I want to quit my 2 part time jobs so I can solely do Promotions full time. She told me to pick up something that I would enjoy doing and make money that way for extra income. I have been thinking of making my own dog collars for awhile now. I have a whole scheme in mind and know a name and everything. My question is, has anyone ever tried making their own dog collars before and is it hard? I have to find a how to book, I'm not the most crafty at stuff like this, but I figured if the collars come out nice, I could always try to sell them and maybe I'll really get into it.

I used to make collar covers, but never collars, though I always thought about it...  Here are some interesting sites I found.  Good luck!

i did for a bit, but couldnt for the life of me find strong enough buckles. the collars looked great and were sturdy, but the buckles always broke.... Sad

I have made some. The custom design works site is what I use for hardware. If you buy the kit, it will come with instructions. I make them with metal buckles, use upholstery thread to sew with. My sewing machine is not too happy when I do this Embarrassed. Probably just user error though. I use a lot of webbing with ribbons sewn on. that gets pretty bulky. I also have some other sites saved for hardware if you are interested.

     I braid my own collars

they're made from paracord - it comes in 32 different colors and depending on the braid style it offers alot of color combinations - but it keeps the same 'diagonal' pattern

I use stainless steel hardware - its braided in so it's quite strong. each strand of paracord is rated at 450lbs breaking strength.

I've also been experimenting with webbing - this is poly webbing it's not as abrasion resistant as nylon, but it doesn't stretch, stiffen or absorb water.  I went the poly web route becuase I"ve had some nylong harness' in the past that have been impossible to adjust after then had gotten wet.

I love the buckles on these - they're the side release ones - buyt they're metal - I dont really trust plastic these days LOL

I sew these with heavy duty polyester thread thats UV resistant - it's made for sewing outdoor furniture stuff I think.

I do sell these but depending on what type of advertising etc you have will determine how successful you will be at selling them.  I sell mine on etsy.com & theres soooooo many other people that make really great collars ( moslty fabric covered - in REALLY cute designs) that I think take up most of the market.  My collars are more function than form - I think the trend is going towards whats 'cuter' since I think most people replace their dogs more frequently now than they did in the past.  I just did a search on etsy for 'collars' and it came up with 196 items.  so there's some competition! ( but like i said those are mostly 'light' duty collars)

It comes down to if you enjoy it :) If you like to make them, make them! do what makes you happy :)
