Riley and Her Blankie (mrstjohnson) **PIC HEAVY**

As some of you read a little bit ago, Riley stopped nursing, although I was sad (still am a little) she has replaced me with something that couldn't touch my heart more.  She has become inseparable to her blankie.  This was my blankie was I was little that my Granny crocheted for me when I was little (she died two years ago and would have been 100 this year).  It is so soft and wonderful, it just melts my heart to see her drag it around the house.  I was so close with my Granny, we shared a room until I got married and was the most wonderful woman God ever created.  I wish she could have met Riley, but just knowing that Riley clings to the exact same blankie my Granny made for me by hand makes me smile....

Enjoy! - Of course there's Charlie in the background doing what he does best!!

Her new thing too is sucking on her fingers...need to ask if that's going to be an issue.  She literally has to suck her fingers whenever she holds her blankie.  If it is in her crib, she will stand next to her crib holding it through the slots and suck her fingers.

The other afghan she is sitting on my granny made for us too.  It matches our new couch perfectly!

OH!   Eeeeep!  She's so beautiful.  That blanket looks so soft.

    • Gold Top Dog

Just reading this made my heart smile. That is so sweet that Riley now gets to enjoy the same blanket that you treasured from your Granny. I have to admit that I was surprised at how nice that blanket looks after all these years. Both blankets are beautiful and your Granny is surely smile down on all of you knowing she's remembered and loved.

Charlie is adorable as always.Big Smile

Riley is just too adorable!! And her blankie looks really special! I think that's the sweetest story!!

Aw, great pictures. And super sweet about her picking your blankie!

As for the finger sucking, Meri sucks her two fingers. She has ever since she found them! I don't think its a problem for awhile though. I think once their baby teeth fall out and the adult ones start to come in is when it could be a problem. I think....

Samatha sucks her left thumb. Only her left thumb. Used to be only when she was tired. Now it's when she's watching tv,sitting in the stroller, her carseat, and when she's mad. It has a callous on it from so much sucking. She is 3. I hate it!! I wish I had given her a pacifire when she was a baby. At least I could have thrown that away!!

If you can figure a way to stop that behavior now I would do it. And please tell me too!!!

I tried to give Meri a paci, but she gave that up for her fingers.

My DH was a big thumb sucker as a kid. His mom got him to quit on his own by telling him the only place he could suck on his thumb was in his bed. He soon realized how much he was missing out on and gave it up on him own. But he was 5, soI'm not sure if that would work for a 3 year old.

LOL Charlie begging is so cute! Riley has her a Binkit! That's what we call them here..."binkits" I know probably every family has a different word...lol. Lovely binkit she has and lovely story to go with. Lily still sleeps with hers...and she's SEVEN haha!

My Grandmother made both Lily and Elias binkits..smaller quilt types which they keep on their beds.

When I was little I had one my Mom made with little quilted squares with "Ziggy" on it...probably no one even remembers Ziggy but he was THE MAN!

    Great pics!

Thanks everyone!  Yes, it still is in good shape.  I was worried at first because I didn't want it to get ruined, but then I thought about it, what good would it do if it sat in a box somewhere.  My sister is going to crochet a smaller travel version since it is so big (it fits a twin size bed).  You should see her dragging this 5 lb afghan around the house...too funny.

Emily - I too tried to give her a pacifier instead and she wanted nothing to do it.  The mostly sucks her fingers when she is 1) holding her blankie or 2) going to sleep (but she's holding it then too.  It really just started when I stopped nursing.  On a related note, I was watching Nanny 911 last night and they had to take away pacifiers from a 3 and 5 year old...that was a mess!!

Gina - mine had holly hobby on it until my granny made me that one.  I think the other one was so worn and tattered that it became completely unusable.  My 11 and 12 year old nieces still have theirs.  My mom turned them into pillow cases so they can still have them when they go to sleep overs without being embarrassed.

Ahhh Riley is so PRETTY!  What a lil heart breaker Big Smile

Will has had a dummy.  I made a conscious decision to offer him a dummy and try to encourage him to use it because I knew I didn't want him sucking on his thumb or finger... or using ME as a dummy.  A dummy has to be GIVEN or looked for, and can't just be used absent mindedly, ya know?  I have a niece who is in her teens and STILL sucks her thumb when she sleeps.  Her teeth are in bad shape, very crooked, but the dentist won't do anything about it till she kicks the habit and this has influenced my decision to actualy encourage William to use a dummy.

If Will seems to *want* his dummy, but doesn't REALLY need it, I casually distract him... like "Bleurgh! You don't need that horrid dirty old thing..." and I swoop it away then we move on to something else... He no longer has a dummy at night and he rarely ever has it in the day.  He still has it for his lunchtime nap and if he has a nasty fall for example and is quite upset, or extra specially tired.  Occasionally he has it for a VERY short time in the evening when we are about to start his bedtime routine and don't want him getting worked up.  I don't think it will be long till he has no need of it at all.

I don't know whether the same would work for fingers!  Just a general discouragement without making too much of an issue out of it would be the line I would take.  It' very possible that she will outgrow it on her own if given the opportunity Smile

     Great pics Lisa!!!

I was a thumb sucker and "bankie" pocessor until probably junior high. Then I got my head gear for my braces and I could no longer get my thumb in my mouth. Then I picked up new annoying habits, but I never smoked Big Smile Just to let you know the flip side.

My mother tried to coax me to stop but it never worked. I wonder though if I had a pacifier as a young'un? I don't see any pictures with one, I had my thumb, mom could never take that away from me now could she. I am not a parent never will be, so I don't have any advice. Again great pics.

That Riley is growing up so fast!  I guess we don't see pics of her very often.  (hint hint ;))  I am glad she has taken to your blankie so well.  I know that means the world to you!

It is a lovely, lovely blankie.

I'm going to horribly embarrass my younger brother - - *looks to see if the coast is clear* HE was a finger sucker. The three middle ones on his right hand I think? I'm almost positive he gave it up when he was in kindergarden and used his right hand for coloring and such, and the other kids didn't suck their fingers in school, so I think he kind of gave it up gradually. I know my mom didn't push him to quit. He still grew up into a fine young man :)
