Any Doberman People? - Rescue Help

A friend of a friend is moving shortly and isn't going to bring her young dobe with her. She isn't sure how long she is going to be away, could be 2 months, could be a year +. I haven't met the owner, but I've met the dog and she has a very nice temperment and gets along with other dogs very well. She is I think about 10 months old now, and unfortunately not spayed yet.

My friend and I don't want to see the dog dropped at the pound. Even if she were adopted, it wouldn't be to a good home in this area. I'm afraid she would end up a guard dog. I've contacted one local dobe resuce, but wondered if any dobe people had any ideas? This isn't my breed so I'm not sure the best contacts. The dog is currently in the Hagerstown, MD area.

I would consider keeping this girl myself, but I'm just not financially ready for a 3rd dog. Just to get her caught up on vet care is beyond my means right now. I also already have a puppy, and don't have time to train 2.

Any ideas are appreciated. I wish people would think it through before adding a dog to the household. I feel bad for the dog.

Thanks. This is the one that I already contacted. I'm just waiting to hear back.

I don't know any of the rescue groups in your area, so I'm not much help.

Contacting members of the local Doberman Club might be a way to find a suitable rescue organization that can help this girl out.  Here's a link to the Metropolitan Baltimore Doberman Pinscher Club.  It should open straight to their member listing for you.

    Good Luck!

I'd take her in a heartbeat if my landlord would allow it.  I hate BSL.  Keep us updated!  I'm pretty far away, otherwise I'd be able to help you out with a few shelter connections.

DARE is a very good resource, as is Delaware Valley DPA  http://www.dvdpa.org/.  I've worked with Sharon Schiele in the past on coordinating rescues, and she really cares about our breed.  They may be busy and not return your call right away, but keep pursuing it.  Clearly, they will be taking dogs in dire straights first (the kind that are found tied to a tree with wounds, abandoned at kill shelters, etc).... but Dobes just do NOT belong in the average shelter - they do not kennel well like that, at all.

    Here's a link to their Surrender page - http://www.dvdpa.org/surrender.htm

Please keep us posted.  I'm fairly familiar with the rescue groups along the north east, and I can refer a couple of other groups, but I prefer these two for your area.

This is quite a way's away, but the animal behaviorist employed by our local humane society is a Dobe person.  Maybe she would know of more Dobe rescues since she works in a shelter?  I agree that Dobe's do NOT kennel well at shelters, the ones we had were always in terrible shape emotionally but the behaviorist took a special interest in them, thank goodness.

It just occurred to me that I should ask - did she get this dog from a breeder and if so has she CONTACTED the breeder yet?

My friend's mom used to breed Dobes out of the Mercersburg, PA area - if your friend is still stuck, let me know and I will ask her for more local resources.  (Mercersburg is only, what, about 30/40 mins away?)

Sorry it took a while to update this. I just started a new job, and I have been busy.

This girl actually went back to her breeder on Friday. We didn't think this would be the type of breeder to take a dog back, but it wasn't the case.

I'm sure she will end up in a nice new home. :)

Good - glad to hear it's back with the breeder!
